Pokemon GO certainly has no shortage of creatures to catch, but some are much more difficult to come by than others. For dedicated trainers, finding and snagging certain Pokemon is a point of pride due to their rarity, and there are plenty of rare monsters of note. But which is the rarest? Although there may not be a definitive answer, Redditor Julie_OwO shared their own thoughts on the matter.
In a Pokemon GO subreddit post on October 25, Julie_OwO asked fans which creature they thought was the rarest in the game. They offered several examples of their own, including well-known picks like Volcarona and the Galarian Bird Trio, but there were some unexpected picks thrown in as well.
Pokemon GO fans sounded off in the comments with their own thoughts, and as expected, the rarest creature can often depend on who is asked.

Pokemon GO fans discuss which Pocket Monster is the rarest in the game
Pokemon GO fans are quite familiar with rare creatures like Volcarona, the Galarian Birds, Armored Mewtwo, and Keldeo, but Julie_OwO expanded on their rare picks with interesting choices like Apex Shadow Lugia/Ho-Oh, the 100% form of Zygarde, and certain versions of Unown.
Meanwhile, other trainers submitted their own propositions like Komala, which has scarcely been seen. The Lake Guardians Uxie, Azelf, and Mesprit were also mentioned, but many trainers agreed that the likes of Armored Mewtwo and 100% Zygarde had to be among the rarest. The latter, in particular, is due to the state of Pokemon GO's new Routes feature, which is needed for collecting Zygarde Cells.
Keldeo was a pointed mention, as it was only available during an $8 paid research questline for a short duration in December 2022. Any trainer who didn't pay for the research missed out on their chance to acquire it, though it's unclear if Niantic will re-introduce the creature during future events.
The Wash form of Rotom was also brought up, as the Electric/Water-type creature was only made available during Pokemon GO Fest 2020 and the 6th Anniversary research questline offered as part of an Ultra Unlock event. There's no doubt that many of the 'mons mentioned certainly have a case for the rarest in the game, but it's tough to parse which takes the top spot without concrete data.
The cloned versions of Charmander, Bulbasaur, and Squirtle were also mentioned, as they were only available during a promo for the new iteration of the Mewtwo Strikes Back! animated movie. All in all, it's hard to argue with the majority of the picks listed by players.
Since the end of The Silph Road and other community groups' partnership with Niantic, it's become incredibly difficult to determine which Pokemon is truly the rarest in the game. Ask 100 players, and 100 different answers are entirely possible. Niantic has had no confirmation on the subject either.
Without empirical evidence, there's little doubt that the game's community will continue to discuss the rarest Pokemon of them all. The answer is only complicated by the shifting dynamics of the game as well, bringing forgotten 'mons back while leaving others to languish. Whatever the case, the debate will continue on, and perhaps the answer will reveal itself in time, one way or another.
