Pokemon GO is full of medals that mark trainers' progress through different tasks and objectives in the game. These medals are functionally the same as stat trackers in other online games, keeping track of everything the player does. Some of them grant bonuses, scaling with their rank. However, some tasks in the mobile title are incredibly difficult to get medals for.
User Chiefster21 took to the Pokemon GO subreddit to point out that some medals in the game can seem impossible to max out. They then asked the community if there are any medals they feel are not worth the effort to obtain.
Some medals, like the one that is rewarded for catching 28 different forms of Unown, seem a bit redundant. Others require trainers to spend a lot of Stardust, which can be a very valuable resource for high-leveled players.

The medals rewarded for purifying Shadow Pokemon and powering up Pocket Monsters can be quite expensive for the average player in terms of Stardust costs.
Another unfortunate part of some of the more niche and difficult medals is that they do not reward the player with any cosmetics or bonuses. However, the ones that do can leave a lot of players unsatisfied with how grindy the experience can be. For example, to unlock every piece of the Fisher cosmetic set, trainers have to catch 300 large Magikarp.
Other medals, like the ones that require winning gym battles or completing raids, are much harder to get for players in rural communities. Some of them reward players with cosmetics, which can make a lot of trainers feel as if they are missing out, which ulitmately leads to a less-satisfying game experience.
User Agreeable_Falcon1044 commented on how the Giovanni-related achievements in Pokemon GO can be quite a tedious grind. Certain objectives that contribute towards these medals are only available in limited quantities.
Giovanni can only be challenged with a Super Rocket Radar, which is only available through completing certain special research quests. This medal also rewards players with a cosmetic set.
User BlueWaffleHouse followed up on this thought by saying this medal used to be very achieveable with Niantic's intial way of introducing Giovanni. Before the 2020 pandemic, Giovanni was a rotating boss that would appear monthly instead of being restricted behind a rare item distributed every three months or so.
Are medals worth grinding in Pokemon GO?
While it may be unrealistic to expect players to obtain every medal in Pokemon GO, there is not much of a need to, outside of trainers simply wanting to. There are medals that are rewarded for catching Pocket Monsters of various elements, but they are meant to be obtained naturally by playing the game.
The medals for winning battles against Team Rocket grunts and purifying Shadow Pokemon could also be considered helpful for players to get. This is because they grant them more Premier Balls when catching Shadow Pokemon.
Outside of this, medals that grant cosmetic items still require trainers to buy them with Pokecoins, so they are not very useful for the casual playerbase.
