Pokemon GO Redditor suggests Gen VIII 'mon is "straight up busted for PvE battles"

Morpeko is the newest addition to Pokemon GO, and players have already figured out the best way to use its unique form-changing mechanic. Unlike previous creatures with alternate forms being released as separate entities, Niantic has incorporated Morpeko's Hunger Switch ability from the main series into the mobile game.

User brhino_reddit on the Silph Road subreddit recently pointed out that Morpeko's form-switching confuses the AI used for Team GO Rocket Grunt battles. This confusion makes PvE trainers think the player has switched out their Pocket Monster, causing them to cease attacking for a few seconds.

Here's the title of brhino_reddit's post:

In the post, brhino_reddit highlighted that Morpeko changing forms triggers NPC opponents to stop attacking.

Morpeko's form change occurs with every charged attack it uses, making it easy to stunlock an NPC without giving them a chance to fight back.

Morpeko's form-changing in Pokemon GO doesn't affect its stats or elemental typing. It merely changes the type of damage its signature move, Aura Wheel, deals.

Proper management of its forms allows Morpeko to essentially have an extra charged attack, giving it access to three moves compared to the standard two with resource investment.

Other players on the subreddit shared their experiences with Morpeko in the competitive scene, calling it a new menace on the battlefield thanks to its adaptability and power.

Many trainers opt to run Morpeko with Aura Wheel and Psychic Fangs for charged attacks, providing Electric, Dark, and Psychic damage, which can hit most of the Great League roster for neutral damage or better.

User Fast_Moon noted that Morpeko might be broken in Pokemon GO's competitive scene for another reason. In their experience, the battle freezes and crashes the game whenever the Pocket Monster changes forms. Given how new this mechanic is for Niantic, a few bugs are to be expected.

It's likely that the developer will fix these issues in a couple of updates, potentially also addressing the bug where Morpeko freezes NPC trainers whenever it changes forms.

Best moveset for Morpeko in Pokemon GO

Morpeko's performance in the Pokemon GO competitive scene can be a bit inconsistent due to its low bulk, but it has a high attack stat and access to tons of coverage options to compensate.

As briefly mentioned prior, Morpeko is typically ran with a moveset of Thundershock, Aura Wheel, and Psychic Fangs. Not only does this moveset give the creature great coverage options, it also gives it great debuff pressure, thanks to Psychic Fangs lowering the target's defenses. Pairing this with its great attack stat makes it a huge threat if not countered appropriately.
