The Pokemon franchise has seen a fair array of alternate types of Poke Balls throughout its many iterations. Being the main device used for catching the namesake creatures of the franchise, Poke Balls have seen all sorts of variants with different effects.

One of the recent types of Poke Balls to receive a rework was the Heavy Ball. In the main series, it was used for catching creatures that were much heavier than average like Steelix or various Legendary Pokemon. However, in the recent Legends: Arceus game, the ball received a change that made it have a much better capture rate but it could not be thrown as far.

User SunnySpots98 on the Pokemon subreddit shared their thoughts on the rework, stating:

The Heavy Balls, as seen in Pokemon Legends: Arceus, were used as a way to catch creatures more easily, but with the downside of the ball having a greatly reduced capture range. As such, the optimal strategy when it came to using these types of balls was to sneak up behind the creature, striking them from behind.

This would result in a dramatic sound effect, as well as time temporarily slowing down to emphasize the impact of the strike. With the hit sometimes being followed by a short cry from the creature struck with the Heavy Ball, it can give the impression that this hurt the creature being captured as emphasized in the post.

The joke among many is that this ball is actually incredibly helpful as it can knock the creature the player is trying to catch unconscious. In particular, many commenters felt attached to the Eevee presented in the initial post, with user Duplicit_Duplicate stating that using the Heavy Ball could be the key to unlocking the desired Ghost-type Eevee evolution.

Another user, HumaDracobane, unearthed the age-old joke in the Pokemon community. Given how most of the Eevee evolutions can be obtained with evolutionary stones, many trainers ironically believe that a simple brick is the evolutionary stone required for players to evolve their Eevee into the never-before-seen Ghost-type form.

User Freddi_47 points out that the description for the Heavy Ball in Pokemon Legends: Arceus states that the ball has a higher effectiveness when used on unsuspecting creatures. This implies that Game Freak did intend for players to use these more heavy Poke Balls to ambush creatures, which is a tad more aggressive than the franchise's norm.

Different Heavy Balls in the Pokemon franchise

Some newer fans of the Pokemon franchise may know of these new variants of Heavy Balls, but they may be more unfamiliar with how they functioned in the main series. These special types of Poke Balls were originally introduced in the second generation of the franchise, being made by Kurt, who would craft these Heavy Balls from black apricorns.

These are different than the Heavy Balls in Legends: Arceus, since the ones in the more recent title are made from minerals in addition to apricorns. This could explain why the Heavy Balls in Legends are much more impactful than the ones in the main series and could explain why the Heavy Balls from the main series only work on heavier creatures, rather than every kind of monster when taken by surprise.
