Charizard ex deck guide: Strategy and how to play

The key player in the Charizard ex deck is Moltres ex, which can quickly amass energy for your Charizard ex. Unlike the Pikachu ex or Mewtwo ex decks where you can directly place the main attacker, you will have to start with Charmander and eventually evolve it to Charizard ex.

As such, you should never put Charmander on the Active Slot before it has evolved to Charizard. This is complimented by Moltres ex's Inferno Dance which can only attach energy to benched Pokemon.

Charizard ex's Crimson Storm is the main attacking move in this deck. This move requires four energy (two Fire, two Colorless) to deal 200 damage, which can knock out every existing card in Pokemon TCG Pocket currently irrespective of their weaknesses.

The best starting hand for Charizard ex deck would be Charmander, Moltres ex, and Professor's Research/Pokeball. You can put Moltres ex directly in the Active Slot with Charmander on the bench. You can then use Professor's Research to draw more cards and hope for Charmeleon or Charizard ex.

Similarly, if you did not draw Charmander, you can use Pokeball to try and get this card immediately. If you have a Ponyta in your starting hand, you can use it to fill the board if the other useful cards do not appear in your initial draw.

As discussed earlier, Charizard ex's Crimson Storm is the primary attacking move of this deck. However, Moltres ex should survive long enough to support your Charizard ex at all costs.

During a match, this is the flow that you should look to achieve:

  • Place Moltres ex on the Active Slot at the beginning of the attack.
  • Have Charmander/Charmeleon on your bench.
  • Attach one Fire-type energy on Moltres ex and use Inferno Dance. Toss coins and hope to get as many heads as possible. Attach all energy generated on Charmander/Charmeleon/Charizard ex on your bench.
  • Once Charizard ex has four energy, use X Speed to swap Moltres ex and bring Charizard ex to the Active Slot.
  • Use Crimson Storm from Charizard ex. This Pokemon will lose two energy.
  • Tank the next turn and only attach one energy on Charizard during your attack. However, if you are near a win condition, you can use X Speed to swap once again and finish off the game. Otherwise, attack with Crimson Storm on your subsequent attack turn.
  • Use Sabrina to force swaps from your opponent if they have Water-type cards like Blastoise ex, Golduck, or Gyarados.

Decks with Charizard ex are by far one of the most damaging decks in Pokemon TCG Pocket.

Counters to Charizard ex decks in Pokemon TCG Pocket

Blastoise ex decks are the best counter (Image via TPC)

Charizard ex deck is primarily Fire-type and is naturally weak against Water-type decks. All cards in this deck will take +20 damage from Water-type moves. As such, decks with Blastoise ex and Golduck are the most prominent counters in Pokemon TCG Pocket.

Blastoise ex decks mostly also have Articuno ex, which can also counter Charizard ex. In such a situation, using Sabrina to force swaps is the ideal way to go. Moreover, Blastoise has 180 HP, which can be difficult to chip down if your Charizard ex is inactive or knocked out.
