The Pokemon World Championships 2024 Day 1 competitions have come to a close. Plenty of action took place both in front of and away from the crowds and cameras across Scarlet and Violet VGC, Pokemon GO, Pokemon TCG, and Pokemon Unite battles. Familiar faces and up-and-comers alike demonstrated their Pokemon prowess, and many trainers rose as others stumbled.

With that in mind, it doesn't hurt to take a look at some of the highlights from Day 1 of the Pokemon World Championships 2024 when it comes to Scarlet and Violet VGC, Pokemon TCG, and Pokemon GO.

Nils Dunlop Continues his Surge with Ice Rider Calyrex

Europe International Champion Nils Dunlop was a player to watch from the outset of Pokemon World Championships 2024, and he didn't disappoint in his match against Australia's Danijel Zitko. With a combo of Ice Rider Calyrex and Amoonguss, Dunlop proved once again the skills he had when taking the EUIC 2024 crown while also showing Calyrex's incredibly high VGC viability.

While the Swedish-born Dunlop did drop a round to Zitko, his Ice Rider Calyrex proved to be the linchpin of the battle, securing a Terastallized Glacial Lance that removed Zitko's flutter Mane and Koraidon at once. Even when Zitko's Chi-Yu managed to beat Amoonguss with Heat Wave, Calyrex had already set the stage for Dunlop's Iron Hands and Regidrago to finish the battle.

All in all, this battle and Dunlop's team strategy in general will ensure that his profile will continue to rise through Pokemon World Championships 2024 Day 2.

Sejun Park's Pachirisu Falls Short of the Worlds 2024 Test

Sejun Park returned to the Pokemon World Championships 2024 with a surprise that many older VGC fans likely remember well. His Pachirisu was a core component of his World Championships 2014 Single-Elimination victory, but the same result didn't come to pass a decade later despite fans being incredibly excited for the Pokemon's return in such a high-stakes environment.

Unfortunately, Aaron Zheng's potent use of Crowned Shield Zamazenta, Chien-Pao, and Rillaboom proved to be too much for Pachirisu to handle. However, fans had to give Park credit for bringing the Electric-type Pokemon in the first place, which gave them some intrigue beyond the usual meta team picks they'd seen throughout the first day of VGC battles.

Two Champions Collide in the First On-Stream Match

Last year's Europe and Latin America champions started the Pokemon GO portion of the Pokemon World Championships this year with a bang as TontonBatteuse of France matched up against LNDsRargef from Brazil.

While TontonBatteuse's Vigoroth closed out the first round by the thread of 1 HP, LNDsRargef adapted on the fly for the next two rounds and showed why he was Latin America's finest.

LNDsRargef leaned heavily on Shadow Gligar and Azumarill in the following two rounds, and while the battles remained close and sparks flew with the crowd at high energy, TontonBatteuse eventually lost the early 1-0 lead and LNDsRargef stood victorious 2-1. This set the stage for the rest of Pokemon GO's action on Day 1.

ValiantVish Clutches Out a Close Match with Lickitung

Lickitung was far and away the most used species in Pokemon GO teams during this year's Worlds competition, which is thanks in no small part to its incredible durability and spammable Body Slam Charged Attack. ValiantVish showed exactly why during a battle down to the wire against Balk88, where Lickitung's durability kept it alive with 1 HP as ValiantVish landed the final winning Body Slam.

This match generated plenty of excitement for Pokemon GO fans and should further cement Lickitung as a meta darling both inside and outside the Pokemon World Championships 2024 arena.

Pokemon TCG Highlights - Day 1

Iron Hands ex Boosts Jesse Parker to Undefeated Status on Day 1

While decks like Charizard ex and Regidrago VSTAR may have been the most picked on Day 1, it was Iron Hands ex that surprisingly made waves for multiple players. This includes the United States' Jesse Parker who is riding an undefeated streak into Day 2 after defeating Calvin Connor 2-0. Even though Charizard ex is a heavy counterpick, Parker's Iron Hands ex deck has shown its viability.

The road to an undefeated run may not last for Parker. However, the Day 1 undefeated run along the likes of Miloslav Poslendi and Isaiah Bradner while using a deck that's been picked by less than 5% of Pokemon World Championships 2024 TCG participants is a feat in and of itself.

Bidoof's Rollout Goes from Meme to Threat with Tord Reklev

The Charizard ex/Pidgeot ex deck archetype is far from uncommon in Pokemon TCG's current meta, but Tord Reklev had a particularly interesting twist for his deck for the first day of the Pokemon World Championships 2024. A surprise appearance from Bidoof and its Rollout attack against Anthony Ribeiro had the commentators and fans in stitches.

Bidoof has long been known as something of a joke in both the TCG and beyond, but the fact that Tord Reklev had the willingness to bring it into the World Championships and still win the match is something else entirely. Bidoof, while it likely won't get much play regardless, has moved beyond the realm of being a meme to being something seen on the Pokemon TCG's biggest stage.
