With all of that in mind, it's worth taking a look at some highlights from the 2024 Pokemon World Championships regarding VGC, GO, and the TCG. Fans may have their own favorite moments, but these highlights might be worth a look as well in case they missed out on some of the action.

Yuta Ishigaki Bulldozes the Top Cut Competition

Yuta Ishigaki of Japan has been on a tear throughout the first two days of the Pokemon World Championships 2024 VGC. Even in the high-pressure environment of the Masters Top Cut, Ishigaki never lost composure. Even after dropping rounds to Sho Akiyama and Justin Knox, the profile of the ace trainer from Japan has surged throughout this year's Masters VGC run.

The stage is set for Ishigaki to face Italy's Luca Ceribelli in the Grand Finals, and for a trainer with a scant track record at majors and a mastery of Pokemon like Pelipper, Ishigaki has a great chance at taking the Worlds 2024 crown after flying under most fans' radars.

Wolfe Glick's Cinderella Run Falls Short

Ahead of the 2024 Pokemon World Championships, Wolfe Glick was a player to watch. The 2016 Worlds VGC champion had been on a hiatus from World Championships for quite some time. However, his 1st place wins at both the Orlando and Charlotte regionals in 2024 seemed to indicate Glick could be heading into Worlds with a ton of momentum to make a championship run.

The momentum certainly carried Glick through Day 1 of VGC, and it wasn't until Kylan Van Severen arrived during Masters Top Cut that things got rocky, ultimately ending with "Wolfey" Glick dropping 1-2 to Van Severen, who would go on to battle Germany's Michael Kelsch.

While plenty of Pokemon VGC fans likely hoped for a different outcome for the 2016 VGC world champion, his return to competitive VGC at the highest level still resulted in a memorable run despite not reaching its intended endpoint.

MartoGalde Splashes on the International Stage

One of the best aspects of the Pokemon World Championships is the players who make a massive impact despite not being on the radar of fans. Such was the case with Argentina's MartoGalde, who ran through regional circuits in Central/South America and took the crown for the 2022 Mexico City Regional Championships.

Despite the credentials, the lack of international presence left many fans unaware of MartoGalde's incredible abilities that saw a showdown with both Inadequance and Yekai0904. There's little doubt that MartoGalde will be a player to watch in the 2025 tournament circuit.

Yekai0904 Becomes the Buzzsaw

Although Yekai0904 doesn't have as lengthy of a competitive resume as many participants in the Pokemon World Championships, his presence in the Pokemon GO brackets was one that more than a few competitors likely dreaded. His Charjabug in particular was a surprising twist compared to the other meta Pokemon on his team, and it was wielded with deadly efficiency.

Yekai0904's run through the Winners Bracket on the way to the Grand Finals felt like an inevitability, winning 2-0 against both Beelzeboy and LurganRocket before an intense 3-2 victory over the upstart MartoGalde to reach the final showdown with Inadequance. It was a tilt for two fantastic competitors, but Yekai0904 showed his killer instinct once again with a forceful 3-1 victory for the Pokemon GO crown.

Ian Robb is Disqualified from a 2-0 Win

In what may be one of the more controversial moments of the Pokemon World Championships, the US TCG player Ian Robb celebrated a 2-0 victory over Fernando Cifuentes of Chile with a bit of an obscene gesture, wiping away the win and giving Cifuentes a second wind that was carried all the way to the Pokemon TCG Grand Finals.

It's a tough pill to swallow for Ian Robb, especially considering how well things were going, but The Pokemon Company takes a hard stance against behavior that's considered inappropriate for all ages. The fact that Cifuentes is now lined up to battle Seinosuke Shiokawa for the TCG crown in the Pokemon World Championships must sting particularly badly, all things considered.

Luck Was on Fernando Cifuentes' Side Against Jesse Parker

The second wind from Ian Robb's disqualification aside, Fernando Cifuentes seemed to have the backing of Lady Luck in the following match against Jesse Parker. Throughout the match, Cifuentes seemed to have a favorable result for nearly every dice roll from cards like Crushing Hammer, but even that didn't seem like enough to stop Parker's advance, leaving Cifuentes in a 1-1 deadlock with a single prize card remaining.

Cifuentes was cornered and Parker was pressing the attack against Cifuentes' Iron Thorns ex, when fortune smiled once again. Switching back Parker's Iron Hands ex as the active Pokemon, Cifuentes cemented the victory by playing the supporter trainer card Penny, bringing down the undefeated Jesse Parker and sending Cifuentes to the Pokemon World Championships Grand Finals.

This, however, was a controversial victory due to the prior disqualification of Ian Robb. Many fans criticized The Pokemon Company and the Pokemon World Championships as a result, but what's done was done. Cifuentes seemed to ride the tides of fate against a TCG mainstay like Jesse Parker and managed to pull out the 2-1 victory.
