Introduced in generation three, with the Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire games, Regice is a monotype ice Pokemon. It is a standalone Pokemon although it was part of the Regi trio in the generation three games. Regice is classified by the Pokedex as the “Iceberg Pokemon” which indicates its general design. This guide will showcase Regice’s appearances in Pokemon media, its capabilities in battle, as well as other general facts about Regice.
About Regice
As a legendary Pokemon, Regice first appeared in the Pokemon movie Lucario and the Mystery of Mew. It appeared in this movie alongside the other two Regi Pokemon from generation three as guardians of the Tree of Beginning. Regice is a standalone Pokemon which means that it does not evolve from or into any other Pokemon. The Pokedex mentions the freezing capabilities of Regice and how it can even survive when submerged in lava.

Appearance
Regice is a large, bipedal, blue glacier-like Pokemon and its entire body looks to be made of ice with seven dots to denote its face. The two arms also appear to be made of ice and there are smaller ice crystals that make up its fingers. Regice balances on two pointed ice crystals and there are four spikes of ice on its back. For a legendary Pokemon it is rather small at only 5 feet and 11 inches, or 1.8 meters tall.
Behavior
Regice is one of the three Regi Pokemon that were introduced in generation three. Along with the other two Regi Pokemon, Regice is one of the protectors of the Tree of Beginning. It is known as one of the Legendary Titans and is said to have been formed from the ice age. Regice’s body is capable of emanating frigid air of up to -328 degree Fahrenheit and the Pokedex states that simply staying near Regice can freeze things solid.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Regice has one of the strongest special defense stats in the entire franchise. While its physical defense and special attack are also respectable, the rest of its stats are abysmal. Typical of most ice type Pokemon, it has a small health pool and can be taken out with a physical fire type move. As a monotype ice type, Regice is 2x weak to fighting, rock, steel and fire type moves, is immune to nothing and only resistant to ice type moves.
Shiny Regice
It is nearly impossible to tell the difference between regular Regice and Shiny Regice. That is because the only real difference is the color of its body as Shiny Regice is a deeper blue shade as compared to the normal version. This slight change in color hue is the only difference between regular Regice and Shiny Regice. Thus to be sure if you have encountered a Shiny Regice, pay close attention to it entering battle as, like all Shiny Pokemon, Shiny Regice displays a starry animation upon entering battle.

Best Moveset
If you find that your team is weak to special type moves, Regice can counter any special attacking Pokemon through virtue of its incredible special defense. While Regice can prove rather ineffective in many other forms of battle, it can defend against special attacking Pokemon with ease. Consider running Rock Polish, Ice Beam, Thunderbolt, and Focus Blast to have the best chance of success with Regice. Rock Polish is a must to ensure that Regice can have some relevance other than taking hits, Ice Beam benefits from STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus), and Thunderbolt and Focus Blast both function as type coverage options.

How to Catch Regice in Pokemon Go
If you would like to obtain a Regice in Pokemon Go, the only way to do so is to encounter one in a tier five raid battle. As a legendary Pokemon, Regice does not appear in the wild and you cannot encounter one naturally. Furthermore, you cannot hatch a Regice and thus you will need to keep your eyes peeled for any tier five raids in Pokemon Gyms to have an opportunity to catch it. Since Regice is a standalone Pokemon, you can keep any candies you obtain to power it up.
Trivia
- Of all the legendary Pokemon in the franchise, Regice has the highest base special defense stat. It is only beaten by Shuckle in terms of special defense.
- The inspiration for Regice’s design likely comes from historical geological periods with Regice representing the ice age.
- The name Regice is a combination of the words regis (Latin for royal) and ice.

FAQ
Is Regice Legendary?
Regice is a legendary Pokemon and was released in generation three alongside the other two Regi Pokemon that all represent different historical geological periods. Regice represents the ice age and functions as a guardian in the Pokemon universe. It also fulfills all the conditions for legendary Pokemon as it cannot be bred, hatched, and can only be encountered once per save file.
What is the strongest Regi Pokemon?
All of the Regi Pokemon are fairly mediocre in competitive play. While all of them excel in one particular form of battle, they are skewed to this one job too much and often fail to meet expectations in other areas. Technically the strongest Regi Pokemon would be Regigas, but it suffers from the worst ability in the entire game.
Is Regice a good Pokemon?
Other than Shuckle, you would be hard pressed to find a Pokemon that can take special attacks as well as Regice. As a legendary Pokemon, Regice also benefits from an inflated base stat total, unfortunately, most of these stats were skewed towards its special defense.
Conclusion
Congratulations, you now know just about everything there is to know about this “Iceberg Pokemon”. While Regice falls a little short for a legendary Pokemon, it is one of the best special defenders in the entire franchise. However, the design of a Pokemon representing a historical age is quite memorable and the Regi Pokemon serve as de facto representatives of their respective age and base stats. Reserve a slot on your team for Regice if you have trouble with special attacking Pokemon.
