The Gym system in Pokemon GO has been under harsh criticism by the community for quite some time now, and players are feeling the burn of its mediocrity more as Niantic keeps incentivizing microtransactions. Currently, leaving Pokemon in team-controlled Gyms is the only way players can get PokeCoins for free, but this system has its fair share of flaws and issues.
Reddit user u/incriminating-hosier has recently started a discussion on the Pokemon GO subreddit about the game's flawed Gym mechanics, in a post to the message board. They also offered the following advice on how the developers can improve this issue:
"Suggestion for Niantic: Keep the 50 coin/day limit, but reward holding a gym for a whole day with 50 coins each day"

In their post, they pitched the idea of players being able to generate 50 PokeCoins per day if they keep a creature in a Gym for over 24 hours. Currently, players do get 50 PokeCoins per 24 hours, but once a specific creature gets that amount, they cannot generate more, even on another day.
To make matters worse, a Pokemon cannot be manually recalled from a Gym once it is assigned there. In other words, players will be completely restricted from using the creature they leave behind until other players defeat them and take over the Gym. With the system the way it currently is, players either instantly get Gyms taken from them, or abandon their creatures in Gyms for weeks at a time.
However, u/Hydrokine offers an interesting perspective on the system the way it is now. In their comment, they state that the current system is healthy for the game, as the resource cap "encourages Gym turnover". If players could manually recall their Pokemon from Gyms, this sentiment would likely be echoed by more members of the community.

Many players who have had their creatures in Gyms for longer than 24 hours would like to take their Pokemon out. With the rewards for taking on Gym battles being as underwhelming as they are, helping another player liberate their beloved monster from a Gym prison is the only real incentive players have.
Many users, like u/Graulithe, have had Pokemon stuck for weeks with no players willing to take the Gym and release these poor creatures. At the time of sharing, u/Graulithe's Weedle has been stuck in a Gym for 112 days. Weedle is by no means a difficult creature to take down, so it is likely that there are no local players or no one wants to go through the trouble for the chance of getting PokeCoins.

Does Pokemon GO need to rework its Gym system?
While the system as of now is far from perfect, a total rework like the community suggests might not be necessary. Rather, Niantic should focus on giving the playerbase the ability to manually recall their Pokemon from Gyms. This would both allow players to take their Pokemon out of Gyms at will, and keep the resource cap on PokeCoins to disincentivize Gym hogging.
