Rolycoly is a Rock type Pokemon that was introduced in Generation VIII. It evolves into Carkoal at level 18 and then into Coalossal at level 34. It is known as the Coal Pokemon, as are its two evolutionary forms. While Rolycoly is just a Rock type, both of its evolutions add Fire to their typing and it has a 50% chance of spawning as either male or female.

Appearance
Rolycoly is a small, coal-like Pokemon and thus it is black and shaped like a rock, with different rock-like protrusions coming off of it. It has one singular eye in the middle of what would normally be a face. Its eye is orange with a white pupil and it has no discernible limbs or other features.
Behavior
Rolycoly was first discovered in a coal mine over 400 years ago and it is found racing around the caves it usually inhabits. Until 100 years ago, all Galarian houses had a Rolycoly as the coal it drops has been used for light and for cooking. Even today the coal still has many uses.
Strengths and Weaknesses
As a Rock type Pokémon, Rolycoly is weak against Fighting, Ground, Steel, Water and Grass type moves, and takes twice the normal damage from them. It is not immune to any type Pokemon but is resistant to Normal, Flying, Poison and Fire types, which will do half the damage. There is no advantage or disadvantage with Fairy, Rock, Dragon, Bug, Dark, Ghost, Electric, Ice and Psychic types.
Best Moveset
Rolcyoly has a lot of strong moves including Stone Edge, which is a move that has 100 power and 80% accuracy. Here are Rolycoly’s best moves; Stone Edge has a high critical hit ratio, but 80% accuracy. Dig tunnels underground on turn 1 and attacks on turn 2. Heat Crash is more powerful based on the weight advantage the user has. Iron Head has 100% accuracy and a 30% chance to flinch the target.

How to catch Rolycoly in Pokemon Go?
Rolycoly is not yet in Pokemon Go. Generation VIII is the most recent generation of Pokemon and not all of them have been added to Pokemon Go. Recently, there was a Galarian event in which the likes of Skwovet, Trubbish, Zacian and other Generation VIII Pokemon were added, but the full roster of Galarian Pokemon has not yet arrived.
Trivia
- There is only one non-Fire type Pokemon that can have the ability Flash Fire: Rolycoly.
- Rolycoly, Carkoal and Coalossal share their type with Torkoal and are the Coal Pokemon. Torkoal is much older, though, having been introduced in Generation III.
- Rolycoly is based on coal and a wheel.
FAQs
How big is Rolycoly?
Rolycoly stands just one foot tall, but is fairly heavy for that height. It weighs 26.5 pounds. Carkoal, the next evolution, grows to 3’07 and weighs 172 pounds. The final evolution, Coalossal, stands 9’02 and weighs a massive 685.4 pounds. Not many final evolutions undergo a bigger weight gain from their original counterpart.
Is Rolycoly in Pokemon Sword and Shield?
Yes. Rolycoly was introduced for these games and has not been added to any other Pokemon game yet. Rolycoly is an easy Pokemon to catch, as you can find and catch Rolycoly in Route 3 with a 99% chance to appear during All Weather weather.
Is there a shiny Rolycoly?
Yes, but not in Pokemon Go. Many Pokemon get a shiny version from Pokemon Go, but since Rolycoly isn’t in that game, it can’t. However, it does have a shiny version that gives it a blue shade rather than the coal black it usually has.
Conclusion
Rolycoly may not seem like a strong Pokemon due to the overall lack of overpowering moves and a low base stat total, but its just the first in its evolutionary line. Getting a Rolycoly is paramount to having a Coalossal, which is one of the best Pokemon in Sword and Shield. Its Rock and Fire type and strong moveset, not to mention base stats, are reason enough to get a Rolycoly and start leveling it up.
