Seaking

Last Modified Sep 22, 2021 07:06 GMT

Introduced in the original generation one, with the Pokemon Red, Blue, and Green games, Seaking is a monotype water Pokemon. It is the final evolution of Goldeen and will evolve upon reaching the level threshold. Seaking is classified by the Pokedex as the “Goldfish Pokemon” which may be a nod to its general design. This guide will showcase Seaking’s capabilities in battle, its appearances in the anime, as well as other general facts about Seaking.

About Seaking

As one of the original 151 Pokemon of generation one, Seaking first appeared in the original series in the episode The Misty Mermaid. It appeared as one of Misty’s sister’s Pokemon in this episode following Ash’s gym battle with Misty. Appearance

Seaking is a large goldfish-like Pokemon with a large horn on its head, and distinct red and black coloring throughout its body. There are two fins on either side of Seaking’s body and it has a large fanned tail fin. It also has a dorsal fin on top of its body and most of its body is red with a splash of black on top of its body while Seaking’s underbelly is white. It has two large black eyes with no other coloring and is an average sized Pokemon at 4 feet and 3 inches, or 1.3 meters tall.

Behavior

Seaking behave similarly like a salmon in that they will swim upriver in order to court females and breed. In the anime, Seaking are shown to be reliable battlers and will be fearsome water type opponents. The Pokedex mentions its behavior in the wild and how it will find mates in the wild. Seaking are also known to become more colorful with each season to attract potential suitors. They are a social Pokemon and will gather in large groups when it is autumn time but they are also known to gather in groups to protect their eggs as pairs, making them a reliable guard Pokemon.

Strengths and Weaknesses

There are no particular strengths regarding Seaking as it is phenomenally weak in many regards and does not manage to reach the standards of many defensive or offensive Pokemon. Not only is it a slow Pokmeon, its defensive stats make it hard to utilize Seaking’s capabilities in battle. As a monotype water Pokemon, Seaking takes 2x damage from grass and electric type moves. It is immune to no types of moves but will resist steel, fire, water, and ice type moves.

Best Moveset

Seaking has trouble competing in competitive brackets of battle but while it has no particular strengths, it is sometimes utilized as an offensive water type Pokemon. While it is not the most powerful Pokemon, it can function well in the rain with the Swift Swim ability. Consider running Waterfall, Megahorn, Return, and Ice Beam.

How to Catch Seaking in Pokemon Go

If you would like to obtain a Seaking in Pokemon Go, the easiest way to do so would be to first obtain a Goldeen and eventually evolve it into Seaking. Like most final evolutions, its base evolution is a more common spawn to encounter in the wild. You can find Goldeen, spawning in the wild, at a boosted spawn rate near harbors, rivers, docks, oceans, and other watery areas. Unfortunately, neither Goldeen or Seaking are available as raid bosses at Pokemon Gyms but you can hatch a Goldeen from 2 and 5 km eggs. You will need 50 candies to evolve Goldeen into Seaking.

Trivia

  1. Seaking’s name in the beta of Pokemon Red and Blue was Neptune, after the God of Sea in Roman mythology.
  2. The inspiration for Seaking’s design is based on the ryukin breed of goldfish.
  3. The name Seaking is a combination of the words sea and king.

FAQ

Is Seaking any good?

There is no particular strength regarding Seaking. While it does come with the ability Swift Swim, it does not have much offensive or defensive capabilities. Seaking has trouble fulfilling any particular role on any team making it a subpar Pokemon. It requires a good amount of support as well as time in order to provide any meaningful impact on competitive play.

What is the evolution of Seaking?

Seaking is the final evolution of its two stage evolution line and it does not evolve any further but evolves from Goldeen once it reaches level 33. There are no special conditions for evolving Goldeen and once you have obtained a Seaking you are finished with this Pokemon’s evolution line.

What number is Seaking?

Seaking is the 119th Pokemon in the Pokedex. The Pokedex will label every Pokemon with a number typically sequentially with its evolutions. However, Pokemon that were released in a prior generation will gain priority over sequential order with evolutions. Therefore, you can use this number to remind yourself which generation a Pokemon was released in.

Conclusion

Congratulations, you now know just about everything there is to know about this “Goldfish Pokemon”. While Seaking has not made a big impact on competitive play in any generation, it is fairly unique as one of the original 151 Pokemon of generation one. Seaking struggles to perform in competitive play against perfectly built Pokemon, but at least it can function as a well rounded Pokemon in casual play. Reserve a slot on your team for Seaking if you want an all around, water type Pokemon.
