Introduced in generation three, with the Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire games, Sharpedo is a dual type water and dark Pokemon. It evolves from Carvanha once it reaches the level threshold and is not known to evolve into any other Pokemon. Sharpedo is classified by the Pokedex as the “Brutal Pokemon” which indicates its general behavior. This guide will showcase Sharpedo’s capabilities in battle, its appearances in the anime, as well as other general facts about Sharpedo.
About Sharpedo
As a generation three Pokemon, Sharpedo first appeared in the Ruby and Sapphire season of the anime in the episode Sharpedo Attack!. Appearance
To go along with its name, Sharpedo resembles a torpedo-shaped shark Pokemon. The design around its eyes makes it seem like it is a ship with torpedoes ready to fire. It has a large dorsal fin on top of its head as well as on its bottom. There are also a pair of fins on either side of Sharpedo and most of Sharpedo’s body is made up of its large mouth. Inside of its mouth are rows of jagged teeth similar to a shark’s. Sharpedo is tall for a Pokemon at 5 feet and 11 inches, or 1.8 meters, tall.
Behavior
Sharpedo is known to be an aggressive Pokemon and in fact, it is so aggressive that most of its appearances in the anime show it as a wild Pokemon rather than a Pokemon that is under the ownership of a trainer. Their aggressive nature and capability to tear through steel with its sharp fangs make them a terrifying Pokemon to encounter. The Pokedex states that if any of its sharp teeth fall out, it will grow back immediately.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Sharpedo has a powerful physical attack along with a respectable speed stat. Unfortunately, a lot of its stats are also allocated to its special attack stat which makes it a waste of distributed stats more than a benefit. It can come with the ability Speed Boost, which can help it naturally set up against teams that are trying to prolong the battle. As a dual type water and dark Pokemon, Sharpedo takes 2x damage from fighting, bug, grass, electric, and fairy type moves. It is immune to psychic type moves and will resist ghost, steel, fire, water, ice, and dark type moves.
Best Moveset
Starting with generation six, Sharpedo received a mega evolution which makes it much more viable in competitive play than it would normally be. Mega Sharpedo is not the speed demon that regular Sharpedo is as its ability Speed Boost is traded for Strong Jaw. This makes Mega Sharpedo’s “bite” moves hit harder, but it will not set up naturally. Consider running Protect, Crunch, Waterfall/Hydro Pump, and Ice Fang. Protect can buy you valuable time, Crunch benefits from STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus), Waterfall and Hydro Pump are interchangeable as Sharpedo’s water type move, and Ice Fang is for type coverage while also benefiting from Strong Jaw.
Protect | Crunch |
Waterfall/Hydro Pump | Ice Fang |
How to Catch Sharpedo in Pokemon Go
If you would like to obtain a Sharpedo in Pokemon Go, the easiest way to do so would be to first obtain a Carvanha and eventually evolve it into Sharpedo. Carvanha will spawn in the wild at a boosted rate near docks, harbors, rivers, oceans, and other watery areas, especially in the rain. You can also hatch a Carvanha from 2 and 5 km eggs, and to make things even easier both Carvanha and Sharpedo can be found in raid battles at Pokemon Gyms. Carvanha can be found as a tier one raid boss and Sharpedo is a tier three raid boss. To evolve Carvanha into Sharpedo you will need 50 candies.
Trivia

- The name Sharpedo is a combination of the words sharp and torpedo.

FAQ
Is Sharpedo a good Pokemon?
Sharpedo has a lot going for it with a good line of offensive stats and its ability that will allow it to set itself up as it stays on the battlefield. However, it is somewhat frail and will get knocked out quickly without much support. Mega Sharpedo trades its Speed Boost ability for more damage which can easily One Hit KO opposing Pokemon.
Does Carvanha evolve into Sharpedo?
Carvanha does evolve into Sharpedo once it reaches level 30 as there are no special conditions to fulfill and Carvanha evolving into Sharpedo finishes the two stage evolution line. Once your Carvanha has reached level 30 you will just need to allow the evolution animation to play without pressing the “B” button.
What are Sharpedo’s attacks?
You will want “bite” moves to utilize with Sharpedo as its mega evolution benefits from these types of moves. Sharpedo will naturally learn Bite at level 16, Ice Fang at level 20, and Crunch at level 34. It will only learn two water type moves naturally through leveling, Aqua Jet and Liquidation, although Aqua Jet is often missed due to its level 1 requirement. You will need to go to a move tutor to relearn the move or teach Sharpedo TMs/HMs.
Conclusion
Congratulations, you now know just about everything there is to know about “Brutal Pokemon”. Sharpedo has made a decent impact on competitive Pokemon battles as a generation three Pokemon and, with its mega evolution, it still sees play today. Even in casual play it can fulfill an offensive Pokemon role without much effort. If you want an offensive water type Pokemon on your team, consider using Sharpedo as it will do a lot of the heavy lifting for you.
