Silcoon is a Bug type Pokemon that was introduced along with the Hoenn Region (Generation III). It is an evolved form of Wurmple and the pre-evolution of Beautifly. This Pokemon wraps itself with silk threads which act as a protective layer while it waits to evolve. The same silk threads are used to hang itself from a tree while it waits patiently.

Appearance
Silcoon has two different looks, varying between the 2D and 3D games. This Pokemon is in an oval shape and is covered in silk and there are marks all around it’s body that shows the imperfect silk weavings. Silcoon is purely white in colour.
In the 2D games, the sprite makes it seem as if Silcoon has only one eye. It also
produces spikes from all sides of its body while it’s eyes are red with white sclera. The 3D version of the sprite shows a bit of the other eye as well, confirming that this Pokemon does indeed have two eyes. The eyes in the 3D version are of a lighter tone as well, making it seem a little pink. This version of the Pokemon are not seen producing any spikes.
Behavior
Silcoon saves up energy to prepare for evolution while it is still a Wurmple. It looks out through the holes in its silk to observe its surroundings. In this state, Silcoon does not move to save up energy and it uses strings to attach itself to a tree, where it hangs. Although many people believed that this Pokemon does not consume anything while in this state, further research showed that it drinks the rainwater that falls on it along with the dew that is formed in the morning. The silk around it serves other purposes as well. For example, it acts as a protective layer in case it is attacked by other Pokemon while in this state. This silk is hard enough to repel them.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Silcoon is a pure Bug type Pokemon and has basic weaknesses and resistances. It takes double the normal damage from Fire, Rock and Flying type moves. On the other hand, it resistant to Ground, Fighting and Grass type moves and thus takes half the normal damage, but has no immunities and is damaged normally by other types.
Best moveset
Silcoon is not a Pokemon that should be used competitively as it has no reason or spot in competitive Pokemon battling. Iron Defense increases your Defense sharply, Bug Bite is a STAB move but will not deal much damage due to its horrible Attack stat. Electro Web is pretty good as a support as it lowers opponent’s speed while damaging them. However, this can be simply changed by switching out. The best shot you have for winning with this Pokemon is to use Poison Sting and pray for that 20% chance of poisoning the enemy and then spamming Iron Defense. Unless you were playing random battles and got really unlucky, there is no reason to play this Pokemon.

How to catch Silcoon in Pokemon Go?
Upon evolving a Wurmple, there’s a 50% chance that it evolves into Silcoon. Wurmple is very common in Parks, Farmlands and Forests and it evolves into Silcoon using only 12 candies. Silcoon further evolves into Beautifly using 50 candies. Currently there is no way to determine whether a Wurmple will evolve into a Silcoon or Cascoon.
It has never been a raid boss before but Wurmple, on the other hand, appeared as a Tier 1 raid boss on 20th March of 2020. During the New Year’s of 2021, Wurmple appeared as a Tier 1 raid boss while wearing a party hat. Unlike its counterpart, Dustox who never got to be a raid boss, Beautifly was a Tier 3 raid boss on 25th February, 2020.
Trivia
- Silcoon went through a design change upon the main series Pokemon games becoming 3D.
- The way Wurmple evolves into Silcoon is based on its nature. This is not reflected in Pokemon Go and is entirely random there.
- Cascoon and Silcoon are not only similar in shape, but also identical in terms of base stats and movepool, making them even more similar.

Conclusion
Silcoon does not fight back even if it is attacked while in this stage. It goes completely zen and does not move or even eat anything in this form. It’s only ‘food’ is the raindrops and dew that falls on its silk. Using the silk, it repels attacks and does nothing in retaliation. This translates to Pokemon battles as well. It contributes nothing and is incredibly weak. It has an incredibly small movepool combined with horrible stats. It simply isn’t a Pokemon designed to battle.
