Sirfetch'd Pokémon

Last Modified Jul 12, 2021 11:26 GMT

Sirfetch’d is a fighting-type evolution Pokemon introduced in Generation VIII that evolves from the Galarian form of the Generation I Pokemon, Farfetch’d. Sirfetch’d evolves from a Galarian Farfetch’d after landing three critical hits within a single battle. It is unique in regards to the very specific way in which it evolves, as well as being unique in how it exists. That is especially since it is the evolution of the Galarian form of a preexisting Pokemon with no evolutions since Farfetch’d has no evolutions while Galarian Farfetch’d does.

The only other Pokemon that shares this characteristic is Cursola and its pre-evolution, Galarian Corsola. Sirfetch'd can be viewed as a parallel to Cursola, as both of their pre-evolved form's original forms do not evolve, and they both change types (Farfetch’d is a normal and flying-type in its original form) while being single-typed Pokemon. This parallel can be seen as the Pokemon Sword exclusive gym leader, Bea uses Sirfetch'd in her team in the Stow-on-Side Gym and during the Champion Cup Finals, while the Shield exclusive counterpart gym leader, Allister uses Cursola in his team. Sirfetch’d and Galarian Farfetch’d are Pokemon Sword exclusive Pokemon, and can only be obtained in Pokemon Shield via trade.

Appearance

Sirfetch’d is a Pokemon resembling an upright white Pekin duck with yellow legs and yellow webbed feet. Sirfetch’d stands no taller than its pre-evolved form Farfetch'd and retains its yellow beak, brown eyes, and eyebrow-like markings, although these markings resemble eyebrows on Sirfetch’d and Galarian Farfetch’d. It has three feathers on the top of its head which bear resemblance to those of Farfetch’d, though in the case of Sirfetch’d they are more curved and less rigid. Its wings serve as humanoid hands, with the feathers at the end of its wings resembling fingers which are used to carry a massive leek in two parts. A long, sharpened stalk is wielded as a lance and the hard leaves of the leek are used as a shield. The lance mostly remains pole-like, with a sharpened, flat end and an outside layer being curled over in order to form the guard of the lance. In comparison, the shield has a pointed tip with symmetrical protrusions forming what resembles a medieval shield with gaps due to the separate leaves.

Behavior

Sirfetch’d is said to be attained by a Farfetch'd who experienced and survived many battles, with this experience causing Sirfetch’d to be noble and calm. Sirfetch’d is known to fight fairly due to a strong belief in maintaining honor in a manner which resembles a chivalric knight. This nature has made Sirfech’d a popular motif for paintings and one specific painting, in the Galar region, showcases a Sirfetch'd duelling with an Escavalier. Like its other form, Sirfech’d values the leek it holds as its most prized possession as it has maintained this leek for many years. Once the leek finally withers, Sirfetch’d will retire from battle.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Sirfetch’d has an incredibly high attack stat which serves it well as an effective wall breaker when combined with it’s relatively high physical defense stat. Sirfech’d has no incredibly low stats but it does have comparatively low HP, special attack, and speed stats. As a fighting-type Pokemon, Sirfetch’d is weak to flying, psychic, and fairy-types but is resistant to rock, bug, and dark-types.

Galarian Sirfetch’d

Galarian Sirfetch’d is the evolution of the Galarian form of Farfetch’d. As Sirfetch’d was introduced in the Galar region, there is no non-Galarian Sirfetch’d. The difference in a Galarian versus non-Galarian form stops in its Farfetch’d form. However, while Farfetch’d is a normal and flying-type Pokemon in its original form, Galarian Farfetch’d, and its evolution Sirfetch’d, are both fighting-types. Galarian Farfetch’d resembles the original Farfetch’d in most aspects, though it is a darker shade of brown and has a larger leek as well as more narrowed eyes and furrowed brows, which were designed to resemble eyebrows more than it did on the original Farfetch’d. Farfetch’d is also very different in the fact that it is incapable of evolving into a Sirfetch’d.

Best moveset

The high attack stats of Sirfetch’d makes it an incredibly useful fighting-type wall breaker. The hidden ability of Sirfetch’d, Scrappy, is incredibly useful if you’re able to find one as it allows fighting and normal-type moves to hit ghost-type Pokemon. Not only that, it also makes Sirfetch’d immune to Intimidate, though this wall breaker moveset still works without the Scrappy ability. In terms of items, it is best to use a Sirfetch’d holding its signature Leek item, which raises its critical hit ratio by 2 and thus makes it easier to knock out opponents within a single hit.

Along with this ability, Sirfetch’d works well in its type coverage with moves such as Knock Off, Brave Bird, and Poison Jab serving as powerful type coverage which can help take out specific Pokemon which are often used as defensive walls within competitive leagues. Most importantly, the move Close Combat is an incredibly powerful STAB (same-type attack bonus) move, which with the ability Scrappy can damage any Pokemon with an incredibly powerful physical attack.

How to catch Sirfetch’d in Pokemon Go?

Glarian Farfetch’d is available in 7km eggs which are obtained from friend gifts. After hatching a Galarian Farfetch’d, it can be evolved into Sirfetch’d by making 10 Excellent Throws with it as your buddy.

Trivia

  1. Sirfetch'd was first teased in a heavily pixelated form (where it was also rotated 90° left, and then horizontally inverted) on the Pokemon Sword and Shield's official website on September 13, 2019
  2. Sirfetch'd and Farfetch'd are the only Pokemon whose names contain an apostrophe
  3. Sirfetch'd can be seen as a parallel to Cursola. Both of their pre-evolved form's original forms do not evolve and they both change types while remaining single-typed.
  4. Sirfetch'd appears to be based on a Pekin duck, as well as a knight armed with a sword and shield
  5. Like Farfetch'd, Sirfetch’d may be inspired by the Japanese saying「鴨が葱を背負って来る」translated literally into the phrase "a duck comes bearing bunching onions” and being used to mean “something surprising but convenient”
  6. Like other Galar Pokemon based around United Kingdom Legends, Sirfetch'd may be based around the character of Sir Lancelot du Lac, one of the members of the Knights of the Round Table. He was also known as the “White Knight” and has a wild onion variant that is named after him called the “lancelot leek”
  7. Sirfetch'd may be a combination of male honorific, sir and far-fetched/Farfetch'd
  8. Galarian Farfetch'd was released shortly after Meowth and Zigzagoon in Pokemon GO, with its ability to evolve into Sirfetch’d coinciding with the release of the Crown Tundra Expansion Pass for Pokemon Sword and Shield on October 22, 2020.

Conclusion

Sirfetch’d and Galarian Farfetch’d are Pokemon Sword exclusive Pokemon, and can only be obtained in Pokemon Shield via trade. Following the Galar region focus around United Kingdom legends and folklore, Sirfetch’d itself shares characteristics with Sir Lancelot of the Round Table, who comedically also inspired the name of a wild leek, the lancelot leek, with leeks being a major focus of both Sirfetch’d and its pre-evolution, Farfetch’d.

With its pre-evolution, Galarian Farfetch’d being an alternative version of a Pokemon that has been around since the original Pokemon games, Farfetch’d known as an unusual Pokemon because its main characteristic was holding a leek and thus it stood out as an odd Pokemon. Sirfetch’d takes this original odd characteristic and turns it into a lance for a knight, matching the Sword and Shield motifs of the Generation VIII games, as well as creating a powerful wall breaker within competitive leagues due to its heightened attack stats. As a major Pokemon, within the branding of Pokemon Sword, in comparison to its less advertised counterpart, Cursola, Sirfetch’d is a Pokemon unlike any other.
