About Starmie

As one of the original 151 Pokemon, Starmie first appeared in the original series with the episode The Water Flowers of Cerulean City. This episode featured Starmie immediately after Staryu’s episode making it one of the first Pokemon to introduce evolution in the anime. The Pokedex mentions a similar perception for Starmie as it did for Staryu as both are characterized as bright gems or stars in the sea.

Appearance

Starmie is a purple, yellow, and red colored starfish-like Pokemon with a total of ten appendages. It is easy to see it as an evolution to Staryu as it grows another five appendages and its colour changes as well as from brown to purple. The yellow center remains, although it transforms into a star shaped ring and Starmie’s core changes from a round circle to a chiseled gem. Starmie is average sized for a Pokemon at 3 feet and 7 inches, or 1.1 meters, tall.

Starmie Appearance

Behavior

While Starmie was prominently featured alongside Misty throughout the anime, there is very little known about its behavior. It is often depicted as a powerful battler and is often shown as Misty’s strongest Pokemon. In the anime, it follows Misty’s commands without trouble and is known to be a loyal Pokemon. The Pokedex states that Starmie is incredibly fast in water and the core at the center of Starmie’s body can glow seven different colors.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Starmie has a decent special attack stat coupled with a good speed stat which makes it a powerful offensive Pokemon. It does have respectable defense stats, but its HP is poor and thus it is best used as an offensive special attacker in battle. As a water and psychic type Pokemon, Starmie is 2x weak to ghost, bug, grass, electric, and dark type moves. It is immune to no types but will resist fighting, steel, fire, water, psychic, and ice type moves.

Best Moveset

Since Starmie’s inclusion in the original games, it has managed to be near the top of competitive brackets. Its offensive statline combined with its solid defensive typing make it a threat on any team. While it is a powerful Pokemon, you will want to use the Leftovers, as a held item, to give it time to sweep the enemy team. Consider running Scald, Rapid Spin, Recover, and Psyshock/Reflect Type. Scald benefits from STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus) while also having a chance to inflict burn, Rapid Spin can clear problematic hazards from your side of the field, Recover can ensure the longevity of your Starmie, and finally Psyshock can be used as type coverage or Reflect Type can be used for outplay potential.

How to Catch Starmie in Pokemon Go

If you would like to obtain a Starmie in Pokemon Go, the easiest way to do so would be to obtain a Staryu with the aim to eventually evolve it. Like most final evolutions, the base evolution is a more common spawn as compared to its final evolution. You can find Staryu in the wild or hatch it from 5 km eggs and it will take 50 Staryu candies in order to evolve into a Starmie. If you would like to skip collecting candies, Starmie can be encountered in tier three raid battles in Pokemon Gyms.

Trivia

  1. In generation two, Starmie was able to learn the move Attract, but since it has an unknown gender, the move had no effect in battle.
  2. The inspiration for Starmie’s design likely comes from the purple sea star or the sunflower sea star.
  3. The name Starmie is a combination of the words star and me (reflecting Staryu’s combination of star and you).

FAQ

Is Starmie a good Pokemon?

While recent generations have finally knocked Starmie out of the top of competitive brackets, it managed to remain near the top of competitive play until generation six. For a generation one Pokemon to stay powerful enough to outperform six generations of new Pokemon speaks to its strength as an offensive special attacking Pokemon.

Does Starmie have a Mega Evolution?

There is no official mega evolution for Starmie in the official mainline games. It was powerful enough when it was released to not warrant a consideration for boosted potential. As the developers of the franchise have moved away from mega evolutions, it is not likely that Starmie will receive a mega evolution in the future.

Why is Starmie Mysterious?

Starmie is classified by the Pokedex as the mysterious Pokemon. This epithet likely comes from its lore in the Pokemon universe as Starmie is regarded as a mysterious entity. There are even sayings in the Pokemon universe that say it’s seven colored gem can communicate with outer space through electric waves.

Conclusion

Congratulations, you now know just about everything there is to know about this “Mysterious Pokemon”. Starmie was able to remain relevant in competitive play up to generation six and even maintains a mid tier ranking in the newer generations. This impact makes it memorable as a powerful water and psychic type Pokemon. Reserve a slot on your team for Starmie if you want a fast, hard-hitting, water and psychic type Pokemon.
