Tyrantrum Pokémon

Last Modified Jul 26, 2021 08:36 GMT

Fossil Pokemon are a staple of the Pokemon series and have appeared in new generations consistently, with the last notable ones appearing in the games X and Y. The dual rock/dragon type Tyrantrum is one of the two Fossil Pokemon from these games and it is the definition of a Fossil Pokemon. It's based on one of the most popular extinct creatures ever, the T-rex, and effectively places the creature in the Pokemon universe.

Appearance

Tyrantrum Appearance

Tyrantrum is a massive bipedal Pokemon which heavily resembles the Tyrannosaurus Rex, a prehistoric dinosaur. It is covered in deep red scales with small patterns of orange scales scattered across it with a white and grey underbelly. There are small orange spikes both on its tail as well as across its forehead making a crown shape. Around its neck and on its bottom jaw are spiked and feathery clumps of white fur.

Behavior

Tyrantrum is a Pokemon which existed 100 million years ago and during its time was so dominant in its environment that it is now called a king. The Pokemon’s jaws are incredibly powerful and could bite through just about everything which made it such a king of its ecosystem. Its main prey was the other Kalos Fossil Pokemon Amaura. While the fur on its resurrected form is understated, it's thought that its original form was completely covered in its white fur.

Strengths and Weaknesses

While Rock and Dragon are decent types on their own, Tyrantrum combines them badly and has an incredible amount of weaknesses. However, it does have a few resistances as it takes half damage from normal, flying, poison, fire, and electric type moves. However, due to the lack of synergy in its typing, it is weak to fighting, ground, steel, ice, dragon, and fairy type moves, taking double damage from all of them.

Shiny Tyrantrum

Shiny Tyrantrum

Shiny Tyrantrum is the rare, recolored form of Tyrantrum. Shiny Tyrantrum has almost every part it changed aside from its fur and stomach, which are still white. The orange scales and spikes on Shiny Tyrantrum are now a shiny silver color and the scales covering Shiny Tyrantrum are a deep blue, contrasting its normal form’s red coloring.

Best Movesets for Tyrantrum

Speedy Offense: Tyrantrum can be a heavy hitter but sometimes lacks in the speed department. However it's not hopeless and in need of Trick Room but it makes up for this failure with a Choice Scarf. And with a solid moveset filled with STAB moves, just having that speed boost can make Tyrantrum much more viable.

Head SmashEarthquake
OutrageDragon Claw

All out Offense: If speed control isn’t important, Tyrantrum shines even more. Mostly because of its ability Rock Head, which makes it immune to recoil which means STAB moves like Rock Head have immense power with zero downsides. Finishing this set off is a Choice Band to boost its absurd attack even further and a few differently typed moves for coverage like Superpower and Earthquake.

OutrageSuperpower/Crunch

How to Catch Tyrantrum in Pokemon Go

Tyrantrum is not yet obtainable in Pokemon Go and neither is its pre-evolution. However it can be assumed that it will probably be obtainable the same way as other fossil Pokemon when it is added. It's likely that Tyrunt will hatch from an egg, probably 7 Km eggs, and will require 50 Tyrunt candy to evolve into Tyrantrum.

Trivia

  1. Tyrantrum is very much a counterpart to Aurorus, even down to both being rock types, both evolving at level 39 and they even have the same base stat total of 521.
  2. Tyrantrum and its pre-evolution are the only Pokemon with the rock/dragon dual typing.

FAQs

Which Pokemon is better; Tyrantrum or Aurorus?

While they may at first seem like they are evenly matched, Aurorus quickly shows itself to be a worse choice. Its typing is abysmal even when up against Tyrantrum, who has an ability which can easily make it outclass even the most prominent dragon types.

Is Tyrantrum legendary?

Tyrantrum is not a legendary or mythical Pokemon but, it is a non-legendary dragon type Pokemon with the highest defenses out of the group.

What are Tyrantrum attacks?

Some of Tyrantrums best attacks include Head Smash and Giga Impact both at 150 power, and Earthquake which is a spread move with 100 power.

Conclusion

While not having the best typing and not being so popular, Tyrantrum really is a king for a reason. Its heavy hitting attack and lack of recoil damage are easy to take advantage of and its sheer bulk can often make up for its long list of weaknesses. Overall Tyrantrum is a good choice on a team that needs a powerhouse and it certainly won't disappoint in that regard.
