The recent G-Max Lapras Raid Day in Pokemon GO highlighted one of the game's major issues. Since G-Max Battles are designed to be the mobile title's "endgame" content, they are significantly more challenging than other fights. However, their numerous limitations have led to widespread player dissatisfaction with G-Max Pokemon.

User EntirePineapple4732 on the Pokemon GO subreddit initiated a discussion by criticizing this feature. According to them, the real challenge in these fights lies in finding enough teammates to raid with rather than the expected skill or strategy needed to defeat the bosses. Their post reads:

"... GMax was supposed to be 'challenging endgame content'. But if the outcome is decided by the factors outside of the actual game, what is the actual challenge in game?"

In their post, EntirePineapple4732 criticized Niantic for the apparent lack of engaging "postgame content" that rewards players for their skill and game knowledge.

The challenging nature of G-Max Battles is primarily due to inflated difficulty levels. Instead of featuring strong bosses with improved AI to present a real challenge, Gigantamax Pokemon have inflated stats and attack damage. This forces players to form large groups, with raid lobbies allowing up to 40 participants at once.

Users like Fieregon also shared their raid experiences, noting that even with large groups, the gameplay often involves mindlessly tapping the screen, which is seen as a fundamental issue with Raid Battles overall.

As pointed out by users like Thanky169, two of the biggest issues with G-Max Battles are the large raid lobby sizes, which require players to gather in large groups, and the lack of remote access. Similar to other Max Battles, as well as Elite and Shadow Raids, trainers must be physically present at the locations to participate in these fights.

This expectation for large groups to gather at G-Max Battle Power Spots is unrealistic for many players, especially in less populated areas or places where Pokemon GO is not as popular. This issue is challenging for Niantic to address quickly.

How can Niantic fix G-Max Battles in Pokemon GO?

Implementing remote access for G-Max Battles would significantly improve public perception of these fights, making it easier to fill the large 40-person lobbies. Additionally, Campfire could make these raids more accessible for rural players.

Improving the gameplay itself is a more challenging issue, as Pokemon GO's raids have always been simple for accessibility. The only real room for skill expression is in team-building and swiping to dodge. While a rework by Niantic is less likely, it would greatly enhance the raiding experience.
