Yamper Pokémon

Last Modified Jul 12, 2021 09:37 GMT

First showcased during an E3 2019 demo, Yamper is the Puppy Pokemon introduced in Pokemon Sword and Shield. It shares this category with Puppy Pokemon from previous Pokemon generations such as Growlithe, Lillipup, and Rockruff. Yamper is an electric-type Pokemon that evolves into Boltund from level 25 onwards. Yamper is not known to be very strong until its evolution, Boltund, which is stronger in terms of speed and offensive ability. Within the Pokemon Sword and Shield games, Professor Cerise owns a Yamper which follows the Professor’s daughter, Chloe over the course of the game. Yamper’s electric ability is connected to its tail in a similar way to many other electric-type Pokemon. When Yamper runs, it generates electricity from the base of its tail. Yamper’s design is based on the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, known as the pet of Elizabeth II, the Queen of the United Kingdom, the country that inspired the Galar region.

Appearance

Yamper resembles a puppy and has a light brown body with a white vertical stripe that leads to a white bottom half of its face. Yellow fluff surrounds its neck and resembles a collar or a scruff, with yellow highlights surrounding its eyes. It’s tail is yellow and bolt-shaped with a heart-shaped pattern on its rear and four white feet. Yamper also has large, pointed ears with lime green and yellow on the inside and a small yellow nose.

Behavior

Yamper is known to be a hyperactive and gluttonous Pokemon. It is drawn to fast-moving things and thus chases after them whenever given the chance. For this reason, Yamper is often used to herd Wooloo in exchange for treats since Yamper is very food motivated. When Yamper runs, it generates electricity from the base of its tail and thus sparks of electricity can often be seen when it is running due to Yamper being unable to store this energy. Joltik are known to feed on the hindquarters of Yamper due to the excess electricity that is discharged from its tail.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Yamper does not have very good stats until its evolution into Boltund, and also has a very low speed stat as compared to Boltund’s very high speed stat and its relatively high attack and special attack is much higher in its evolution as well. As an electric-type Pokemon, Yamper is weak to ground-types but is resistant to flying, steel, and electric-type.

Shiny Yamper

Shiny Yamper resembles a puppy that has a light pink body instead of a light brown body. The main way to get a Shiny Yamper is to continuously breed either Yamper or Boltund until getting a Shiny Yamper.

Best moveset

Yamper should not be used in competitive leagues until its evolves into a Boltund because it does not have very good stats at the start. Yamper’s low speed stat, when compared to Boltund’s very high speed stat, makes it’s relatively high attack and special attack not useful. However, that is also much higher in its evolution. For this reason, Yamper’s moveset should be set up in preparation for its evolution into Boltund, since this evolution is relatively early. Thunder Fang is a solid STAB (same-type attack bonus) move in order to deal damage, with Fire Fang and Play Rough both serving as type coverage. Finally, Volt Switch also Yamper to deal damage right before switching out. This move, along with Play Rough serves to have Yamper take damage in order to raise its attack right before switching out in order to avoid being knocked out.
