In Season 9 of The Office, Dunder Mifflin Paper Company had Dwight finally promoted as a regional manager in a much-deserved manner. However, two of the most crucial decisions Dwight Schrute takes after his promotion is the firing of HR Toby and Kevin. While the loathed HR being fired did not bring tears to the eyes of the audience, the firing of Kevin broke some hearts.
There are many theories as to why Kevin was fired from The Office despite Dwight and his friendship. Although it is a sad affair indeed, many fans stand by the decision of Dwight and have had many theories over the years as to what might have caused him to take such a step as his first job as a regional manager in the season finale.
Although all is forgotten and they reunite in the end, there are some great theories all over social media that explain why Kevin might have been fired in The Office-
Why was Kevin fired in The Office? 3 major conspiracy theories
1) To save him from jail time
According to user u/nhontran from the Reddit community, r/DunderMifflin, Kevin was highly unqualified for the job in The Office and was taking part in insider trading. The question posed by the user was as follows:
“In the show Kevin admits he had done a lot of insider trading and admit it (episode: The Convict). So when the show aired Dwight had no choice but to fire Kevin to save him from jail. That's my theory, what do you guys think?”
The fact that Kevin is a gambler also does not help his case. It is seen in The Office episode, Scott's Tots that he was not even a trained accountant, but he landed the job after asking about a job in the warehouse.
He embezzled money over the years from the company behind a naive accountant front and used that money to open a bar later on. Dwight probably became aware of this, and to put a stop to it and save him from going to jail, fired him.
2) Kevin was actually a secret genius
It was always suspected by fans of The Office that Kevin was not who he seemed. Behind his unsuspecting stupid persona, fans speculated there was a genius hiding. It is much more evident in the episode, Garage Sale, where Kevin goes away with everyone’s money after pretending to be frustrated.
According to u/fluffy_boy_cheddar on the Reddit platform, Kevin and his methods were dubious from the start and he was a “secret genius” who pretended to play the fool and managed to outshine everyone in the end despite being fired:
“Unofficial deleted scene: Kevin walks out of the office with chocolate cake still on his chin. The camera crew follows him to his car. He turns and smiles at the camera and says, (in Brian Baumgartner’s normal speaking voice) “and that folks…is Dallas.” Confirming the fan theory that Kevin was a secret genius who embezzled the company for years and was ready to move on. The “Keleven” was his grand finale.”
So, Kevin never really suffered a loss in this case and fans can feel a bit less sorry for him. After all, his job at the bar worked out and that suited him far better than the office ever could.
3) Kevin was truly incompetent and the firing was necessary
Kevin’s replacement, Dakota, in the final season, finds some oddly scribbled symbols all over the accounts. When she asks Oscar about it, he says that it is Kevin’s magic symbol/number, 'kelevin', that is supposed to make the accounts go right.
Maybe the reason why only their branch was able to keep afloat while the other closed down was because Kevin and his miscalculations showed a profit at a time when there was none.
However, it could be detrimental to a company’s success if such an important thing is just glossed over in jest or friendship. So, the decision to fire Kevin was a tough but deserving one.
The Office US is being rebooted, and the original showrunners are speculated to return to the front army. Only time will tell how this pans out.
