1) The Buccaneers is an adaptation of an unfinished novel

The upcoming series is an adaptation of an unfinished novel written by Edith Wharton. The first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize in Fiction, Wharton is a well-known name in the literary world. Bookworks would already be acquainted with some of her more notable works, such as The Age of Innocence (1920), The House of Mirth (1905), and more.

The talented author's last book, The Buccaneers, remained unfinished as she passed in 1937. The same was published in 1938 posthumously. Eventually, Marion Mainwaring finished the novel in 1993.

2) This is an earlier adaptation of The Buccaneers

The upcoming series is not the only adaptation of Edith Wharton's last novel. Screenwriter Maggie Wadey adapted the book into a screenplay for a TV show that was released in 1995. Given that Wadey wrote the ending for the show, it was different from Mainwaring's version.

Unfortunately, the show received a lot of criticism from viewers and fans of Wharton's works. Critics felt that the screenplay deviated from Wharton's style of storytelling and that it was more attuned to the mainstream style that is common in Hollywood. Fans hope that the upcoming series will not be disappointing like its predecessor.

3) Susanna White acting as lead director

Star Wars fans will be familiar with Susanna White's work as she directed three episodes of Andor (2022). Not only that, the award-winning filmmaker has worked on plenty of notable projects in the past, including Jane Eyre (2006), Boardwalk Empire (2011), and Generation Kill (2008).

Fans of the genre will breathe a little easier with White on the team, as her experience can be advantageous for The Buccaneers. Also, it does help that she has worked on adaptations before, so she will have a good idea of how to stay true to Wharton's vision while also creating a compelling cinematic experience that viewers will find entertaining.

4) Christina Hendricks is in a prominent role

The talented actor first made a mark with her standout role as Joan Harris in the hit show Mad Men. In the upcoming show, the award-winning actor will be donning the role of Mrs. St. George.

In addition to Hendricks, the audience should also keep an eye out for Kristine Froseth, who has received praise for her roles in The Society and Looking for Alaska, and Alisha Boe, who made a mark with her role in 13 Reasons Why.

Principal photography for The Buccaneers started back in 2022 in Madrid. And then the series was shot in Scotland. According to reports, the cast and crew were spotted in Glasglow shooting for the upcoming series.

Given how Edith Wharton is a celebrated author, viewers who enjoy adaptations will certainly be looking forward to seeing how the show creators give their own spin to The Buccaneers.
