The annual beach party held at Crystal Beach on Bolivar Peninsula in Galveston County, Texas, known as Jeep Weekend or Go Topless Weekend, took a turn for the worse as law enforcement faced the daunting task of maintaining order amidst the heavy partying.
The event, which took place over the weekend starting on Saturday, May 20, attracted thousands of car enthusiasts and turned into a scene of public intoxication, disorderly conduct, and numerous arrests.
According to the Galveston County Sheriff's Office, over 230 people were taken into custody, primarily for public intoxication or disorderly conduct offenses.
Netizens were appalled at the happenings of the event and grimaced at the immaturity of the adult crowd.
230 people arrested, 283 charges filed, 13 felonies, and 40 minor injury hospitalizations were some of the numbers provided by Major Ray Nolan of the Galveston County Sheriff's Office.
In an effort to curb outrageous behavior and prevent the event from spilling into nearby residential areas, police doubled their presence at the party compared to previous years.
Law enforcement agencies, including the Galveston County Sheriff's Office and Texas DPS, deployed approximately 150 deputies to patrol the beach and ensure the safety of the attendees.
Despite these efforts, the number of arrests and charges kept filing in, increasing from last year.
Major Ray Nolan acknowledged the event's challenging nature but deemed it a "successful" operation considering the circumstances.
Despite the "success", the event still had its fair share of major incidents. A woman was in critical condition after a serious head injury resulting from getting thrown out of a truck with an intoxicated driver.
Additionally, armed robberies and several shootings were reported, one of which left an individual with critical injuries.
Netizens urge adults at the Jeep weekend to "grow up"
Internet users called out the attendees of the Jeep Festival for acting like children and ruining a good event. Some users were vocal about how they're ashamed of what humans have become and others complained about what a nuisance the partygoers must be to the natives.
There were also a lot of comments blaming alcohol for the reckless acts of the individuals.
There were a few interesting conversations about Jeep vehicles. Many users prophesized their love for the vehicles, others let out their dislike of the brand and its owners. There were others who mentioned that they didn't see any Jeep at all in the festival footage.
The Jeep weekend has an outrageously notorious history
Last year's Jeep weekend saw a Galveston County sheriff’s deputy needing to be airlifted after being hit by a vehicle. The deputy suffered two broken legs, broken arms, and a head injury.
Crystal Beach's Go Topless Weekend has become notorious for its excessive behavior and strain on emergency services. The influx of participants, estimated at nearly 80,000, creates a heavy burden on local resources.
Law enforcement agencies, along with Galveston County Emergency Services, have been carefully planning and deploying additional personnel to manage the event effectively.
Despite attempts to maintain order, the event has drawn criticism from local residents and officials alike. Complaints range from excessive littering on the beaches to disruptive behavior exhibited by non-Jeep owners who attend the gathering.
Jeep clubs have even chosen to hold separate events, distancing themselves from the growing chaos associated with Crystal Beach's chaotic Weekend.
