Balenciaga, the luxury fashion house, has unveiled a new towel skirt with a price tag of $925, which has become a subject of ridicule among netizens online. The "Balenciaga Towel Skirt" is worn as a "unisex, mid-rise, knee-length skirt," according to the brand's original website.
Although a part of the label’s Spring 2024 collection, the skirt was not presented on the runway at Paris Fashion Week. It appeared on their website on November 15, 2023, instantly going viral.
The brand has made a name for itself with its unique sense of style, which occasionally borders on the bizarre. For example, their releases of the Croc heel and the trash bag purse caused much stir online, as per Vogue.
Balenciaga gets slammed for its new towel skirt worth $925
Balenciaga has recently gone viral for their high fashion apparel resembling an after-shower look. The Towel Skirt is sold in grey terry, beige, black, and stone gray colors. Much like its name, the garment appears to have the look of a towel wrapped around the model's waist, the only difference is that both the male and female models wore full clothes underneath it.
The skirts are made of terry cotton and have two buttons on the waistline along with an adjustable belt with a buckle inside. The Balenciaga logo is embroidered tone-on-tone at the front of the towel skirt, and the line was made in Italy, as most of the brand's clothing. To top it all off, the garment is dry cleaning only, as per UNILAD. The price of the item is the main topic of ridicule among the netizens, as the skirt costs $925.
People soon took to Twitter to give their opinions about the Balenciaga towel skirt:
The towel skirt comes only a few months after Denma Gvasalia's February interview with Vogue where he spoke about how the brand was planning to remove all the gimmicky pieces and improve the brand’s image with a more serious clothing line:
"It’s a serious job, you know, to make clothes. It’s not about creating image or buzz or any of those things."
However, Balenciaga might not be the only one using towels for their clothing. Many other brands have previously used towel material and shower looks for their collections, as per The Cut. Various brands, including Prada, Fendi, and Ludovic de Saint Sernin have presented towel skirts on their runways in the 2020 Spring collections, as per Vogue.
Two years before them, Donatella Versace had brought back a butterfly-printed terry cloth collection from the 1995 collection of Gianni Versace. Miu Miu and Acne Studios presented their towel ensembles in 2017 and 2015, respectively. In the 1989 Vogue magazine issue, Marc Jacobs designed and captured a sequined towel dress.
As per Vogue, fashion dating back to 1954 shows pictures of a model wearing a white terry cloth towel wrapped around her head, captured by John Rawlings. The German model and actress, Veruschka von Lehndorff was photographed in an orange towel with a string of beads around her neck in 1967.
Balenciaga has not commented on the backlash they have received for the towel skirt.
