Tracing Billy Idol and his music career

William Michael Albert Broad, better known by his stage name Billy Idol, began his career as a guitarist with the London-based retro-rock band, Chelsea, with whom he remained till he and Tony James formed the punk band Generation X.

It was with Generation X that Billy Idol first found major success, leading the charge in the Second British Invasion of USA as one of the pioneering punk bands of 1970s Britain. The band's eponymously titled debut studio album peaked at number 29 on the UK album chart.

The singer remained with Generation X till it disbanded in 1981 and then transitioned into a solo career, releasing his eponymously titled debut studio album on 16 July 1982. The album peaked at number 5 on the Kiwi album chart.

Following the success of his debut solo album, Billy Idol released his second studio album, Rebel Yell, on 10 November 1983. The album peaked at number 2 on the Kiwi album chart.

The singer achieved critical acclaim with his third studio album, Whiplash Smile, which was released on 20 September 1986. The album peaked at number 8 on the UK album chart, as well as at number 6 on the Billboard 200 album chart.
