As per as.com, Ted Cruz became the senator of Texas for a third term on November 5, 2024, defeating Democratic candidate, Rep. Colin Allred. Cruz has been serving as a U.S. Senator from Texas since January 3, 2013, and has extended his term by another six years in addition to the 11 years he has already been in office.
While Cruz received support from dark money donors, Republican Super PACs, and billionaires, netizens weren't as thrilled to see him get elected as Texas' senator for a third term.
Internet users took to X to express their opinions on Ted Cruz's win in the 2024 elections wherein one X user expressed discontent over Cruz being born in Canada and referred to the time he went to Cancun for a family vacation when Texas was battling a deadly winter storm in 2021:
"btw if you’re a Texan and you voted for Ted Cruz (born in Canada, leaves his family and dog to freeze in the cold with no power to go to Cancun) instead of the guy born in Texas who is a FOURTH GENERATION TEXAN you are a pathetic human being frankly"
"People in Texas were left to freeze to death while Ted Cruz went to CABO and they have now voted for that guy to win TWICE. You literally can’t make this goofy shit up. He literally showed you who he was and you idiots said, GIVE US MORE!" an X user mentioned
"I never have, never will support this man 😡 sad that many in Texas want to keep him because he’s republican." another X user stated
"Big facts my power was out for almost a week and a half s*it was crazy as f*ck and he was chillin and s*it smh." an internet user said
Additionally, internet users also called out citizens of Texas in their tweets questioning why they re-elected Cruz:
"Texas wtf has Ted Cruz done to make you want him back in office? He’s a f*cking traitor." an X user tweeted
"Are yall ok in Texas? How is this a close race ? Did yall forget the winter storm when yall didn’t have power & he went to Cancun??? Yall have had 263 Power Outages since 2019 & yall are still voting for Cruz?" another X user questioned
On the other hand, Cruz's supporters expressed excitement about the senator getting re-elected:
"Ted is a true champion for conservative values who fights to protect and defend faith, family and freedom!" an X user commented
"WOOOOOOOOO TED CRUZ HAS DEFEATED HIS ENEMY IN TEXAS. TEXAS SENATOR GOT A THIRD TERM DEFEATED ALLRED" another X used mentioned
"Texas will remain in Texas"- Ted Cruz mentions in speech after winning the election
Making an appearance amidst hundreds of supporters in a downtown Houston hotel ballroom, on November 5, 2024, Ted Cruz mentioned in his winning speech:
“Tonight the people of Texas have spoken, and their message rings clear as a bell across our great state: Texas will remain in Texas."
Additionally, the senator also emphasized the support he has gained from Hispanic voters in traditionally Democratic areas like the Rio Grande Valley. He said that he is seeing a "generation change in South Texas."
While the race between Cruz and Colin Allred tightened as the date of the elections kept nearing, many thought Cruz wouldn't be re-elected given that Allred's campaign was based on the Texas senator abandoning the region during 2021's winter storm and his support for the state six-week abortion ban.
As per NBC News' exit poll reports dated November 6, 2024, 47% of female voters cast their ballots for Ted Cruz this year as compared to 51% of female voters who voted for Allred.
However, Cruz's winning voters came from Latino voters in Texas wherein 52% of Latino and Hispanic voters in the state voted for Cruz compared to 35% of Latino and Hispanic voters casting their ballot in Cruz's favor in 2018.
As per as.com, senators can serve for an unlimited number of terms on the condition that voters of their state re-elect them.
Additionally, according to The Texas Tribune dated February 2021, after receiving backlash for leaving Texas amidst a winter storm and flying off to Cancun, Ted Cruz said that it was a mistake and he wouldn't have done it in hindsight.
