The global box office had taken a significant hit due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with many theaters closed or operating at reduced capacity. While theaters are recovering from the pandemic, the number of theaters in February 2023 far surpasses that of the same month in 2022. The release of the February 2023 films resulted in surprisingly successful theatrical releases thriving even more dramatically than last year. Let's check out the top five highest- grossing films.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is the 31st Marvel Cinematic Universe movie, following Ant-Man (2015) and Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018). The movie is directed by Peyton Reed. A number of members of the original cast of Jeff Loveness's previous films have returned to Quantumania, while Jonathan Majors debuted in the movie as Kang the Conqueror.
Other cast members include William Jackson Harper, Bill Murray, Michelle Pfeiffer, Corey Stoll, Michael Douglas, David Dastmalchian and Katy O'Brian. Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) and the Wasp (Evangeline Lilly) drive their family into the quantum kingdom to take on Kang.
With the earlier release of Ant-Man 1 & 2, the movies have earned $519.3 and $622.7, respectively. The third installment, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, released on February 17, 2023, is expected to perform more at the box office overall, compared to Ant-Man 1 and 2. However, at the end of February 2023, the film Ant-Man 3 earned $365 million.
Knock at the Cabin
The film is based on the novel The Cabin at the End of the World in 2018, written by Paul Tremblayand and starring Jonathan Groff, Ben Aldridge, Kristen Cui, Dave Bautista, Rupert Grint, Nikki Amuka-Bird, and Abby Quinn. Groff and Aldridge play a pair who make a trip with their daughter (Cui) to a cabin in the woods. While they are there, all three are being held hostage by four unidentified assailants under the command of Bautista, and it is said that one of them must be sacrificed for the sake of saving the world.
Knock at the Cabin was a major success at the box office on its first weekend, with a whopping $21.2 million from its initial release on Friday, February 3, 2023. With a budget of $20 million, by the end of February 2023, the film generated $52.2 million.
Magic Mike's Last Dance
In Magic Mike's Last Dance, the former stripper Mike Lane, played by Channing Tatum meets a wealthy socialite Maxandra Mendoza, played by Salma Hayek Pinault, at a party where he is a bartender for a catering company after he lost his furniture business due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Both start a love story and a professional relationship that can bring Mike's greatest dreams to reality. The other cast of the film includes Ayub Khan Din, Vicki Pepperdine, Alan Cox, and Caitlin Gerard.
The second sequel of Magic Mike by Steven Soderbergh is made with a budget of $45 million and as of February 2023, the film earned $48 million at the box office.
80 for Brady
The sports comedy film stars Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, Rita Moreno, and Sally Field. The film is the inspiration of true events and follows four friends Lou, Trish, Maura and Betty on a football journey. Best friends, who are hardcore fans of Tom Brady, head to Houston, Texas, to watch the New England Patriots play the Atlanta Falcons in the Super Bowl Ll. The film is directed by Marvin and written by Sarah Haskins and Emily Halpern. 80 for Brady was presented by Paramount Pictures along with Fifth Season.
80 for Brady was amazingly successful at the box office. Out of a budget of $28 million, 80 for Brady earned more than $12.5 million on its first weekend, surpassing its original projection by about $10 million and in February 2023 the movie earned $37 million.
Cocaine Bear
From the title itself, we can pretty much guess the story of the film. Cocaine Bear tells the story of a bear who accidentally ingested a huge amount of cocaine and makes deadly ravages. The film has received positive reactions from the audience and the critics, and the film currently holds a Fresh rating in Rotten Tomatoes. The film is written by Jimmy Warden and directed by Elizabeth Banks.
This comedy-horror film was made with the budget of approximately $30 - 35 million and it has earned $30.2 million at the end of February 2023. The financial success and the climax of the film give a hunch for its sequel but there is no official announcement yet.
