"It's a shame" - Donald Trump alleges immigrants in Ohio consume pets
On September 9, 2024, Donald Trump's running mate JD Vance took to X to express his opinion on the alleged issue of Haitian immigrants consuming pets. In his tweet, JD Vance mentioned:
"Months ago, I raised the issue of Haitian illegal immigrants draining social services and generally causing chaos all over Springfield, Ohio. Reports now show that people have had their pets abducted and eaten by people who shouldn't be in this country. Where is our border czar?"
While Vance's tweet added to the social media rumors about Haitian immigrants, Trump commented on the same during the presidential debate. The former president stated:
"They're eating the pets of the people that live there, and this is what's happening in our country, and it's a shame."
However, the ABC News anchor co-moderating the presidential debate, David Munir, was quick to fact-check the former president's claims about Haitian immigrants.
It was reported that the city manager in Springfield, Ohio mentioned to the network that there were no credible reports of pets being injured, harmed, or abused by people in Springfield's immigrant community.
Clarifying their stance on the rumors, the Springfield Police Division emailed their statement to NBC News wherein they stated that they wished to clarify the recent rumors claiming criminal activity by the immigrant population in the city. The statement mentioned:
“We wish to clarify that there have been no credible reports or specific claims of pets being harmed, injured or abused by individuals within the immigrant community,”
Among other claims on immigrants, the former president also referred to false rumors about a Venezuelan gang seizing and taking control of an apartment complex in Aurora, Colorado. However, these claims were also debunked by local officials, as per NBC News.
In addition to ABC News and the Springfield Police Division clarifying that Trump's claims on Haitian immigrants were just rumors, Springfield's mayor Rob Rue also addressed the same on September 10, 2024, at a meeting of the city commission.
He mentioned that rumors of this sort were taking away from the city's real issues like housing concerns, overwhelmed healthcare, and resources needed for schools.
