On December 4, 2024, UnitedHealthcare's CEO Brian Thompson was shot dead, and investigators are working to identify the shooter using CCTV footage and the contents of a bag left by the gunman in Central Park.

Law enforcement discovered the shooter's bag on December 6, 2024, which was full of Monopoly money and a jacket that has not yet been confirmed as the same one the killer wore at the time of the shooting. As reported by Daily Mail on December 9, 2024, forensic psychiatrist Dr. Carole Lieberman believes that the items found in the shooter's backpack give an insight into the mindset of the killer.

In an interview with The Daily Beast dated December 8, 2024, Dr. Carole Lieberman said:

"He may have planned to scatter the Monopoly money around the CEO's body after he shot him, but he forgot to take the bills out of his backpack."

The forensic psychiatrist added that the Monopoly money conveys a message that UnitedHealthcare is a "ripoff that steals money from patients" to pay millions to its executives, and that is a monopoly in itself. Dr. Lieberman's theory adds more weight to the speculation that the killer had animosity toward UnitedHealthcare.

"This seems much larger, like a vigilante"— Retired FBI agent Jennifer Coffindaffer comments on Brian Thompson's killer

As reported by The Daily Beast on December 8, 2024, retired FBI agent Jennifer Coffindaffer emphasized two clues related to Brian Thompson's death, suggesting that the shooter was trying to make a statement.

Commenting on Brian Thompson's killer and his motive, Coffindaffer said:

“To me, this seems like somebody far beyond just a personal situation, that he lost a family member or a loved one due to lack of being insured. This seems much larger, like a vigilante, somebody who is well prepared to make a big statement and that he blames UnitedHealthcare in this situation.”

Coffindaffer also discussed the shell casings found at the crime scene, which had the words "deny," "depose," and "defend" written on them. While many might interpret the word "depose" as legal jargon for deposition, she disagreed. Coffindaffer said that if the first definition of the word "depose" is looked at in the dictionary, "it means to take from office forcefully, and that’s what he did.”

Additionally, when the publication asked if the killer was playing with the police on purpose, Coffindaffer suggested that it might be possible, adding that it was a sign of someone "truly narcissistic in nature." She further shared that the shooter might be trying to make himself stand out as an intelligent and "smarter-than-police type figure," claiming that this was the killer's motivation in this case.

NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny informed reporters on December 6, 2024, that Brian Thompson's shooter used a fake ID and paid cash during his ten-day stay in Midtown Manhattan.

Moreover, the FBI has offered a reward of $50,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Thompson's killer, while the NYPD has offered a $10,000 reward.
