Following the exponential rise in its popularity, Chicago Fire has been renewed for yet another season. The drama television series first debuted in 2012 and has since managed to take the world by storm, also managing to gain its own spinoff, Chicago P.D., just two years after its debut.

Apart from Chicago P.D., the show has also been spun off into two more series, namely Chicago Med and Chicago Justice. The show follows the rescue personnel and paramedics of the Chicago Fire Department at Firehouse 51, led by Deputy District Chief Wallace Boden, as they encounter numerous challenges in both their professional and personal lives.

The official synopsis of the show, as per Rotten Tomatoes, reads:

"As the firefighters, rescue squad and paramedics of Chicago Firehouse 51 forge headfirst into danger, the choices they make can mean the difference between life and death. But from the relentless pressure of saving lives, an extended family is forged."

It continues:

"Led by Chief Wallace Boden, Matthew Casey, Kelly Severide, and the others know -- when it's go time, Firehouse 51 lays it all on the line for each other. This high-octane drama from Executive Producer Dick Wolf offers an edge-of-your-seat view into the lives of everyday heroes committed to one of America's noblest professions."

While the show was announced for a twelfth season by NBC, the release date for the upcoming installment has not been revealed to the public. As per NBC Insider, the show is set to arrive in the autumn of this year. With an intriguing storyline and an incredibly talented cast, Chicago P.D. season 12 is sure to be a thrilling escapade for viewers.

Chicago Fire season 12: Will Casey and Brett rekindle their relationship?

While NBC has yet to reveal the premise for season 12, it also remains to be seen where the characters on the show head next as the season 11 finale is set to premiere tomorrow, May 24, 2023. Fans have already started to speculate about the premise for the next season.

Perhaps the most popular storyline among fans is that of Matthew casey (Jesse Spencer) and Sylvie Brett (Kara Kilmer). The fictional couple has managed to garner much attention and has also managed to acquire their own fanbase as a result of the beautifully crafted love story depicted in the show. However, in a controversial move, the show featured Spencer in just one episode this season.

That episode hinted that the couple will not only get back together but also hinted that Kara Killmer's time as Sylvie Brett in the show might be coming to an end. Season 11 introduced a new love interest for Brett in the form of a charming hospital volunteer Dylan, played by Christopher Allen; however, fans weren't too happy with the storyline and labeled their relationship as 'dry' with absolutely 'no chemistry,' and are now hoping that the show introduces Jesse Spencer's character again.

Fans of the show have also been very vocal about Dylan and Sylvie's storyline being unnecessarily dragged on and very underdeveloped as compared to Jesse and Sylvie's storyline. With rumors swirling around that season 12 will probably be the last season featuring Kara Killmer, it is highly expected that the show says goodbye to the character by pairing her up with the fan-favorite character, Matthew Casey.

In an interview with NBC, Jesse Spencer, who plays Matt Casey on Chicago Fire, commented on the possibility of this storyline in the upcoming season and said:

"The storyline [in Episode 18] does allude to Casey sort of eyeing whether he could actually move back to 51. Can he potentially, in the future, rekindle his relationship with Brett [Kara Killmer] and start that fire again? We’re 'gonna have to see. Casey’s looking at it; it’s a potential thing, but we just don’t know right now. We’ll leave that to the future. We’ll throw it to the gods and see what they say."

Among other surprises rumored for season 12, people are expecting Taylor Kinney's Kelly Severide to return, as the character was written off the show in the current season because the actor was dealing with a personal issue.

More about Chicago Fire's cast

NBC has not announced any changes in the cast for season 12 of the show, and therefore, it is reasonable to assume that the previous cast will be reprising their roles for the upcoming installment of the drama series.

This means that Chicago Fire will see David Eigenberg (who plays Lieutenant Christopher Herrmann), Joe Minoso (who plays Joe Cruz), and Miranda Rae Mayo (who plays Lt. Stella Kidd) reprise their iconic characters.

Chicago Fire will also feature the following characters in the upcoming season of the show:

  • Christian Stolte as Randall "Mouch" McHolland
  • Alberto Rosende as Blake Gallo
  • Daniel Kyri as Darren Ritter
  • Hanako Greensmith as Violet Mikami
  • Eamonn Walker as Deputy District Chief Wallace Boden

However, as mentioned above, it is not confirmed if Taylor Kinney's Kelly Severide and Kara Killmer's Sylvie Brett will be returning for season 12.

Chicago Fire season 11 finale is all set to premiere on NBC on May 24, 2023, at 9 pm ET.
