Armita Geravand was officially declared brain dead

The Hengaw Organization for Human Rights reported on October 3, that a few days ago, Armita Geravand was allegedly assaulted by female morality police at Tehran's "Shohada" subway. The assault was allegedly due to the 16-year-old not adorning a mandatory hijab in public.

Armita was hospitalized at the Fajr Hospital, and the hospital was subjected to strict security measures. She was initially reported to be in a coma, with her already serious condition worsening on October 11, 2023, according to Borna news agency, a state-affiliated news agency.

The teen's father told Hengaw on October 22, 2023, that her medical team had informed the family that Armita's brain was "no longer functioning" and there was no hope of recovery.

The Tasnim News Agency, another Iranian state-affiliated agency confirmed on Sunday:

"Follow-ups on the latest health condition of Armita Geravand indicate that her condition of being brain dead seems certain despite the efforts of the medical staff."

In CCTV footage posted by Iranian authorities, the teenager could be seen entering the metro along with her friends, without a hijab. Shortly after, her limp body was lifted out of the train by other passengers. However, footage from inside the train was not released.

Iranian authorities, including the head of the metro, denied any claims of assault or altercation. Authorities maintained that the girl's condition was caused due to fainting from low blood pressure. Her parents also told a state-affiliated news agency that their daughter fainted and hit her head due to low blood pressure.

Just about a month ago, in September 2023, Iran passed the hijab bill. The bill declared 10 years in prison for those who wore an improper hijab, an improper dress, promoted n*dity in coalition with foreign governments and media, or ridiculed or insulted the hijab. A fourth-degree prison sentence awaited those who appeared "n*ked or semi-n*ked in public".
