Barack Obama wins big at the 2023 Creative Arts Emmy Award, an event honoring artistic and technical achievements in various television genres including reality, variety, documentary series, specials, and animated shows. The prestigious awards were presented last weekend on January 6 and 7 in a two-night ceremony held at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles.
Even though it wasn’t the main TV event, it awarded some of the most beloved TV personalities and shows including Beer, The Last of Us, and Wednesday. Besides Barack Obama, John Mulaney, RuPaul, and Keke Palmer won big at the 2023 Creative Arts Emmy Award.
The main 2023 Primetime Emmys Creative Arts Awards, originally scheduled to be held last September, were postponed to January this year owing to the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes. It will air via FXX on January 15, at 8 pm ET, nearly four months after the originally planned date.
Former US President Barack Obama wins a 2023 Creative Arts Emmy Award
The former US President scored an Emmy win at the 2023 Creative Arts Emmy Award that took place on Sunday, January 7, 2024. Barack Obama was honored with the statuette in the Outstanding Narration category for his stint in the documentary series Working: What We Do All Day.
He also served as a producer along with his wife Michelle Obama on the four-part series that premiered on Netflix in May 2023. Inspired by the 1974 book Working penned by Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Studs Terkel, the documentary as per the official description by Netflix:
“Explores the ways in which we find meaning in our work and how our experiences and struggles connect us on a human level.”
Morgan Freeman, Angela Bassett, Mahershala Ali, and Pedro Pascal were the fellow nominees beaten by Barack Obama at the Creative Arts Emmys. The former US President was not present at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles for the two-night award-show marathon that honored the best in artistic and technical achievement in American prime-time television.
Notably, this isn’t the first time that Obama has won an Emmy Award, last year he bagged the same accolade for his work in the Netflix documentary, Our Great National Parks. In addition to this, he also has two Grammy awards for the voice work in the audiobooks of his two memoirs.
Nominations and winners of 2023 Creative Arts Emmy Award explored
The top three nominees this year included Succession with 27, the Last of Us with 24, and The White Lotus with 23. At the Creative Arts Emmys, The Last of Us dominated the winners list after winning eight awards. This was followed by The White Lotus which won four trophies for its music, hairstyling, and casting.
Welcome to Wrexham collected five Emmys and the Oscar-shortlisted documentary Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie earned four. RuPaul continued his legacy by winning his 13th Emmy, which is notably his 9th consecutive win in the outstanding host category for RuPaul’s Drag Race.
Keke Palmer collected the outstanding game show host for Password, becoming the first woman to win the award in 15 years. Carol Burnett’s 90 Years of Laughter was one of the biggest winners, while John Mulaney was awarded for writing the Netflix standup special Baby J.
Derek Hough took home his fourth Emmy for choreographing Michael Buble’s Higher in Dancing with the Stars. Additionally, Ed Sheeran became one of the Emmy recipients for co-writing the song A Beautiful Game for Ted Lasso on Apple TV+.
TV alums Nick Offerman and Judith Light also won their first Emmy for starring in guest roles.

An edited presentation of the 2023 Creative Arts Emmy Award aired on Saturday, January 13, at 8 pm ET, exclusively on FXX. For cord-cutters, the award presentation that was held at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles will be available to stream on Hulu the following day.
