According to Gazette Direct's report dated November 16, 2024, the rumor began on November 15, 2024, with a video posted on the Elon Musk Rewind YouTube channel with the title "Elon Musk Just BOUGHT Amazon & Ends All Competition!".
By November 18, 2024, the YouTube video garnered tens of thousands of views and was shared multiple times on X. In the video and social media posts, Elon Musk allegedly says, "I just officially bought Amazon." Moreover, the video's thumbnail showcased Musk holding a contract for the Amazon deal.
As per the fact-checking website Snopes' report dated November 21, 2024, the link to the YouTube video displayed the message:
"This video is no longer available because the YouTube account associated with this video has been terminated."
Snopes mentioned that the rumor alleging Elon Musk has bought Amazon is false, given no major news outlet or credible source has confirmed the same.
Additionally, the video's clips, thumbnails, and voice narration were seemingly created using AI tools, and artificial intelligence was used for editing and clip selection.
Elon Musk alleged that Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos asked people to sell their Tesla and Space X stocks
Elon Musk and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos have publicly commented on one another multiple times. According to a report by People dated September 2022, the alleged "rivalry" between Bezos and Musk started in 2004.
The Tesla CEO and Amazon CEO have not only competed in having the highest net worth but also in a competition to be the first since 1972 to place humans back on the Moon. In this space race, Musk owns Space X, and Bezos owns Blue Origin, both reusable rocket companies.
Musk took to X on November 21, 2024, and claimed:
"Just learned tonight at Mar-a-Lago that Jeff Bezos was telling everyone that @realDonaldTrump would lose for sure, so they should sell all their Tesla and SpaceX stock 🤭"
Jeff Bezos was quick to respond to Musk's allegation, denied what the Tesla CEO claimed, and said, "100% not true." Further responding to Bezos' comment, Musk tweeted:
"Well, then, I stand corrected 😂"
Moreover, according to a report by The Economic Times dated November 22, 2024, Musk reportedly commented on Jeff Bezos' former wife, Mackenzie Scott. The Tesla CEO mentioned in his tweet:
"Super rich ex-wives who hate their former spouse" should filed [sic] be listed among "Reasons that Western Civilization died"
While Musk deleted his comment on Bezos's wife, the post he commented on seemingly concerned Mackenzie's charitable endeavors. The post said that more than half of the organizations to which Mackenze donates deal with issues of race and/or gender.
Gazette Direct's report debunked the claims of the Tesla CEO buying Amazon by stating that the market cap of the American multinational technology company stands strong at $2.13 trillion. In other news, Elon Musk was recently appointed by President-elect Donald Trump to co-lead the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) along with Vivek Ramaswamy.
