Recently, a rumor surfaced online that English singer and songwriter Sam Smith announced that they were “self-partnered” or in a romantic relationship with themselves. It first emerged on the Facebook page called Wakefield News on November 17.
“Sam Smith has clarified that he is SELF-PARTNERED which means that they is not single but he is actually in a relationship with themselves,” the post read.
It featured a photo of the Writings on the Wall crooner wearing a black kaftan, diamond studs, and a matching purse. The post earned 313 reactions, 246 comments, and 58 shares, at the time of writing.
However, the now-viral rumor has turned out to be fake. Sam Smith, who identifies as non-binary and uses the pronouns they/ them, has not made any public announcement about being “self-partnered.”
Moreover, the Wakefield News page on Facebook is known for its satirical/ parodical content, as mentioned in its bio that reads, “A news page for people who like a laugh. Nothing on this page is serious. Parody account.”
Sam Smith is not in a relationship with themselves
Apart from the viral Facebook post, the same rumor also circulated across other social media platforms, especially X. For instance, on November 18, influencer and self-proclaimed conspiracy theorist who goes by Concerned Citizen (@BGatesIsaPyscho) on the platform and shared a TikTok reel originally posted by @_room404.
“Sam Smith just came out & announced he’s ‘self-partnered,’ meaning they/ them are in a relationship itself. Here is Sam Smith before & after Hollywood,” the X post was captioned.
In the 17-second TikTok reel reposted by Concerned Citizen, nowhere did it substantiate the rumor that the Lay Me Down singer has announced their self-partnership. Instead, it talked about Smith’s career and how Hollywood fame allegedly changed their personality.
The clip showed the 32-year-old Londoner wearing a cream-colored suit and performing in what it describes as “Sam Smith before fame,” in contrast to them wearing a devil’s costume during a concert, referred to as “Sam Smith now.”
“What selling your ‘soul’ looks like,” the TikTok video added.
While the post garnered severe traction online with over 1.3 million views and further fueled the rumor, it has turned out to be fabricated and unfounded, seemingly for virality, sensationalism, and entertainment.
Meanwhile, Sam has lately also not spoken about their current relationship status on social media, in interviews, or other public appearances.
Notably, another meme page on Facebook called British Feed whose bio clearly mentions, “Bringing you daily British Memes, all posts are to be seen as satirical,” also made similar claims about the artist being “self-partnered.” It further helps debunk the rumor. Additionally, the fact-checking website Snopes has also labeled it as satire.
This is not the first time rumors about Smith’s s*xuality and relationship status have emerged. In August this year, a claim arose that they announced themselves as “semi-bis*xual.” However, it was later debunked by several outlets, including the LQBTQ+ website, PinkNews.
Sam Smith came out as gay in May 2014. At the time, they were dating actor-model Jonathan Zeizel. Subsequently, they were reportedly in relationships with Charlie King, Jay Camilleri, and Andy Newton Lee.
Later, he got involved with actor Brandon Flynn and announced the same on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. However, in June of the following year, they announced their split.
In October 2017, the Grammy winner came out as genderqueer. Two years later, they further revealed they were non-binary. For the last two years, they have been romantically linked with womenswear designer Christian Cowan. The pair appeared during the Met Gala in New York City on May 2024.
