The viewers learn about Carl’s impending doom in the midseason finale of season 8 episode 8 when he protects Alexandria from the saviors while seemingly weak. The bite is finally revealed when Rick and Michonne discover the bite on his abdomen after their return.

It is a highly emotional scene as the audiences have seen Carl grow up in the show, and to see him in his final moments of death would bring tears to any die-hard fan’s eyes. The viewers also learn that Carl spent his last day writing letters to his loved ones, in which he tells them that he dreams of a peaceful ending to the war with the Saviors. He wishes that there is a world beyond wars and that humans could learn to live together again.

The midseason premiere of season 8 sees Carl telling Rick, Michonne, and Judith how much he loves them, and then he shoots himself before he can turn into a walker. Rick and Michonne wait outside while they hear a gunshot, and later on, they bury Carl’s body in a graveyard in Alexandria.
