As they ventured into the heart of the Fold during the climax, even a mere touch from Mal seemed to grant Alina enough power to fulfill her destiny, but the Darkling intervened by assaulting Mal.

In his final moments, he implored Alina to drive a knife into his heart to complete the amplification ritual, ultimately leading to his demise and the dispersion of the darkness.
