Game of Thrones Map
When it comes to world building, then the series Game of Thrones has done an amazing job, giving us various fictional locations on the show. While the two main lands (continents) in the series are termed as Essos and Westeros, there are various towns and locations mentioned both in the novel and series. Let's check them out:
1. Dragonstone
Dragonstone is a place located a few 100 miles north-east of King's Landing and is known as a volcanic island. Before Aegon Targaryen's conquest, this location was known for having a small port with a large castle built by the Targaryens as a trading outpost of the great Valyrian Freehold.
In the series we have seen Stannis Baratheon ruling over this place for most of the series until Daenerys Targaryen reclaimed it in season 7.
2. Sunspear, Dorne
Sunspear in Dorne is the capital stronghold of the House Martell, which is located in the far-eastern coast of Dorne and consists of two strong towers. These towers were called the Spear Tower and the Tower of the Sun, where the Prince of Dorne’s throne room was situated. Among the various locations in the series, this place was not favored by many Game of Thrones watchers.
3. Braavos
Termed as one of the nine Free Cities, Braavos is located in the east of Westeros, across the Narrow Sea. The landmark of this city is quite noticeable as we see a 400-foot tall statue called the "Titan of Braavos” as we enter the city. Initially, this place was built and founded by escaped slaves in the era of the Valyrian Freehold.
In Game of Thrones, we see Arya Stark coming to this place to learn the ways of Jaqen H'ghar and the Faceless Men. This place was also mentioned to be the home of Syrio Forel, “First Sword of Braavos” and Arya's fencing teacher.
4. The Eyrie
The Eyrie was another place in Westeros that was linked to the Starks and was a stronghold of the House of Arryn. The reason why it was linked to the House of Starks is because the Queen of the Vale was the mad Lysa Arryn, sister of Catelyn Stark. The kingdom is situated on the east coast of Westeros and is placed on top of a peak in the Mountains of the Moon with a height of over several thousand feet.
5. Casterly Rock
While only shown for a brief time in the Game of Thrones, Casterly Rock was a significant and important stronghold for the House of Lannister. Located on the Western coast of Westeros, this place has a beautiful view overlooking the sunset. Not only that but it was said in the series that this place had a major goldmine, which made it even more of an important place for the Lannisters.
6. King's Landing
King's Landing is the capital of the continent of Westeros and is the place where the high king or the King of the Nine Kingdoms is situated. Situated on the Blackwaters, this was the very same place where Aegon the Conqueror landed in Westeros to begin his conquest to conquer all the nine Kingdoms. Being one of the most important places in the series, the main city in the place was surrounded by a wall and was manned by the elite army of the King - the Gold Cloaks.
7. The Iron Islands
While not much is known about the Iron Islands, we surely know that this is part of Westeros, and is the home of the House of Greyjoys. This port is a cluster of seven small islands and has the Castle of Pyke which is ruled by Theon Greyjoy’s father.
8. Meereen
Before Meeran was conquered by Daenerys Targaryen, this place was a port for slave markets. Here people from all the kingdoms came to purchase slaves to do their work. Initially, this place was ruled by the Ghiscari Empire which was one of the greatest empires in the east until it was conquered by the Valyrians and their dragons.
9. Oldtown
Oldtown, located in south-western Westeros in The Reach, is mentioned to be the largest port rivaling King’s Landing itself. The city is mentioned to be quite clean and attractive to live in and this was the place where Sam and Gill took shelter, where Sam visited the Citadel to do a bit of self-learning.
10. Qarth
Qarth is one of the major trading hubs in Game of Thrones. While this place was known as the center of the world for trade, culture, and politics, the place was ruled by greedy men and women who wanted power for themselves. In the series, Daenerys Targaryen realized how the world really worked during her time in Qarth. Daenerys, Jorah, and the remnants of Khal Drogo's khalasar wound up here, penniless and starving, and by the end of their time there, they were one of the strongest forces to reckon with.
11. Riverrun
Riverrun has been the ancestral place of the House of Tully for the last thousands of years. On the Game of Thrones map, this place is located at a river land where the Tumblestone and Red Fork rivers of The Trident meet, making it a strong three-sided castle. This place is noted to be the house of Catelyn Stark, ex-Tully, and her sister Lysa.
12. Hardhome
In the Game of Thrones series, Hardhome is shown as a Free Folk fishing village beyond the Wall along the Shivering Sea. This place is at the large peninsula known as Storrold's Point, and has been seen in the series as a place where the Free Folk who survived the battle against Stannis Baratheon had fled to.
13. The Twins
The Twins is a massive fortress for the House of Frey. Also called The Crossing, this place had a similar-looking castle on each side of the river which gave the ruler great power over people who wanted to bring their armies across.
In the series, The Twins was famous for the Red Wedding that happened which massacred a massive chunk of the Stark family, at the hands of Walder Frey. The character ruled over the place until Arya Stark took her revenge and ended his life.
14. Vaes Dothrak
Throughout the Game of Thrones series, Vaes Dothrak is the only Dothraki city which is located under the Mother of Mountains. This is a massive place of land, enough to hold every Dothraki khalasar at the same time. While the Dothraki people are nomadic in nature and like to travel a lot, this place is mostly inhabited by the slaves and the "dosh khaleen," the widows of deceased khals.
An interesting fact about this place is that there are no bladed weapons allowed here. When Daenerys was sent here as a prisoner, she went and burned down the temple of the Dosh Khaleen and emerged as the Mother of Dragons.
15. Valyria
The only time we see the kingdom of Valyria is when Ser Jorah passes through its ruins with Tyrion and gets attacked by Stone Men. At the time, Valyria was shown as ruins but it was once a very powerful civilization known as the Valyrian Freehold. This freehold was known to be the peak of human life which had the power to control dragons to conquer any empire.
