Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is finally running in theaters. The second offering from Phase Five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe hit the cinema halls on Friday, May 5, 2023. Directed by James Gunn in his last Marvel and Guardians installment, the superhero movie has cast the original stars including Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Vin Diesel, and Bradley Cooper. Upon release, the threequel managed to earn rave critical reviews, and the same was reflected in the commercial window collections as well.
At the domestic box office, it has pocketed a good sum of $114 million over the debut weekend, The Numbers reported. An additional haul of $168.1 million from other markets helped the ensemble film touch a global total of $282.1 million, the portal added.
This is surely impressive since the new film has finally achieved something many other projects could not do: Dethrone The Super Mario Bros. Movie from the numero uno spot in the first May weekend. The animated offering collected $18.6 million on its 4th weekend, coming in second after Vol. 3.
The most interesting takeaway from the box office battle is that it’s Pratt v/s Pratt since both the movies are being led by the Minnesota native. The Super Mario Bros. Movie also stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, and Jack Black, among others.
China is the topmost global box office contributor of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
As per Deadline, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was expected to earn around $110 million on its first weekend in the domestic circuit. Released across 4,400 theaters in the United States and Canada, the Marvel flick made a solid $114 million instead, grabbing the top spot.
The international box office poured $168 million more into the collection, taking the overall toll to an ignited $282 million. Among the pockets, China beats all with a $28.1 million contribution, followed by $14.7 million from the United Kingdom, and $13.6 million from Korea. Mexico at $13 million and France with $8.2 million round up the top five box office pals of Vol. 3, reported Variety.
Forbes stated that the Chris Pratt-starrer has been released in 3D, IMAX, Dolby Cinema, 4DX, and ScreenX theaters and that the 4DX 3D version is the best fit to watch the film. In fact, Gunn and his team reportedly made 600 different variants to distribute the film in different cinemas.
Apart from the ones mentioned, the cast also comprises newcomers like Will Poulter as Adam Warlock, Chukwudi Iwuji as the antagonist The High Evolutionary, Linda Cardellini as Lylla, Nathan Fillion as Master Karja, and Sylvester Stallone as Stakar Ogord.
At the ticket window, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 didn’t really face much competition as it premiered alongside Love Again, starring Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Sam Heughan, and Celine Dion (in her feature debut). The film received negative critical reviews and collected a measly $2.4 million domestically.
On May 12, the next weekend, Book Club: The Next Chapter, Fool's Paradise, Hypnotic, Knights of the Zodiac, Monica, and The Starling Girl are slated to release. Given there’s hardly any hype surrounding these films, it seems Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will have a gala run till Fast X arrives on May 19.
