The movie was shot chronologically. The cast and crew faced immense difficulties filming in the harsh conditions. DiCaprio had to eat a raw liver of a bison despite being a vegetarian in real life. DiCaprio was enduring, like his character, a brutal cold and almost got hypothermia. DiCaprio also had to sleep inside animal carcasses for the scenes in the film.
