Luigi Mangione was charged with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson
Luigi Mangione was charged with Brian Thompson's murder alongside four related gun charges on Monday, December 9. Reuters reported that the charges filed by New York prosecutors brought an end to the highly publicized extensive five-day manhunt for the whereabouts of Thompson's killer.
According to court documents obtained by the outlet, the 26-year-old was seated at the back of an Altoona, Pennsylvania McDonald's outlet sporting a blue medical mask while looking at a laptop. As per Reuters, the press conference stated that a customer and an employee recognized Luigi Mangione as the suspected Brian Thompson killer and the employee dialed 911.
One of the officers at the press conference revealed that Mangione went quiet and started shaking when asked if he had recently been to New York. Fox News reported that Altoona Police Officer Tyler Frye knew that Mangione was the suspect immediately after he pulled the mask down.
According to the criminal complaint based on his arrest, Luigi Mangione's backpack contained a 3D-printed pistol with a plastic handle, a metal threaded barrel, and a 3D-printed black silencer. He was also found to be in possession of clothing similar to the ones worn by the shooter and a fake New Jersey ID.
The very same New Jersey ID, which identified him as Mark Rosario was used by the shooter to book himself into a New York City hostel prior to the shooting. The Maryland native, who last lived in Honolulu and had ties to San Francisco, also reportedly possessed other fake IDs.
Authorities also found a three-page document in which Mangione detailed his disdain for corporate America. As per NBC New York, Luigi Mangione attended an elite Baltimore prep school where he passed out as a valedictorian in 2016 before receiving undergraduate and graduate degrees in computer science from the University of Pennsylvania in 2020.
According to the same publication, Luigi Mangione hailed from a prominent Maryland real estate family. He was ordered to be held without bail during a preliminary court hearing on Monday.
