According to reports, the Chief Joseph Ranch, where the fictional Yellowstone Ranch was filmed, spans an area of about 2500 acres.

According to the television show, the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch is one of the biggest ranches in the USA. However, the series never explicitly states how big the ranch is and according to reports, the Chief Joseph Ranch spans about 2,500 acres.

That would only be a small portion of the fictional ranch's size, which is described as being the size of Rhode Island in the series. The fictitious Yellowstone Ranch should be somewhere between the approximately 776,900 acres of Rhode Island and the approximately 825,000 acres of the Kings Ranch, the largest ranch in the United States.

In light of this, the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch's land size should fall between 775,000 and 825,000 acres. In the drama, Willa Hayes makes an offer to the Duttons for a portion of their property at the rate of $10,000 per acre. At that price, the ranch should be worth around $8 billion.

Where is the Chief Joseph Ranch?

The Yellowstone Ranch, a fictional ranch, is based on the Chief Joseph Ranch, a real ranch in the vicinity of Darby, Montana, at 125 Appaloosa Trail. The Chief Joseph Ranch, formerly known as Shelton Ranch, is where most of the series' filming is done.

The glass tycoon William S. Ford and the judge Howard Clark Hollister oversaw its continued success in the 1900s after it was founded sometime in the 1880s. In the 1950s, the Ford-Hollister Ranch, as it was then known, was sold and renamed the Chief Joseph Ranch.

Melvin Pervais acquired the 1,400-acre Chief Joseph Ranch in 1987. The ranch was in poor condition when it was acquired by Canadian-American businessman Pervais; the barns were deteriorating, and the perimeter wasn't fenced. Over a ten-year period, Pervais improved the property and thoroughly renovated the lodge to bring it up to its Ford-era standards.

He had a pet bobcat at the time named Toma after one of Chief Joseph's wives. In 2004, Pervais sold the ranch.

Currently, Shane Libel and his family are said to be the ranch's owners. The ranch is available to the public as a guest ranch when the cast and crew of the television show are not staying there, and it has grown to be a well-liked tourist destination in Montana. The actual Dutton Ranch, however, which is a part of the Dutton-Goldfield Winery in Sebastopol, California, has nothing to do with the TV show.

Is it possible to stay at the Chief Joseph Ranch?

The enormous dairy barns and guesthouses that are frequently featured on the show were also constructed in 1914. The current ranch owners live in the lodge, keep dairy cows in the barns, and, most importantly, rent out the guesthouses as luxurious ranch vacation homes in a rustic setting when the show isn't being filmed.

Fans of Yellowstone will be able to identify the guesthouses as Lee Dutton's cabin, the son of John Dutton, from season 1, as well as Rip's cabin from season 1 and Kayce's cabin from season 2. Although the main lodge is not open to visitors, all cabin guests are welcome to tour the entire property and the filming locations.

Lee Dutton’s Cabin

In the real world of Chief Joseph Ranch, Lee Dutton's cabin is referred to as "The Fisherman Cabin." The lovely cabin was once used to house the ranch's staff before changing into a guesthouse and eventually becoming well-known in Hollywood. It offers sweeping views of the surrounding Bitterroot and Sapphire Mountains and looks out over the river.

It costs $1,200 per night for up to 8 guests (up to 4 guests; each additional guest is $50 per night extra). The cabin is equipped with all the necessities, such as a kitchen and grill for cooking and serving up the recently caught fish from the Bitterroot River.

Rip’s Cabin

The Ben Cook Cabin, or Rip's Cabin, is a little bit bigger, as any head wrangler should be! Up to four guests can stay for $1,500 per night; each additional guest costs $50 per night. Additionally, it offers breathtaking views of the Montana countryside and is equipped with all the comforts of home.

Both cabins offer access to the majority of the ranch property for riding horses and fishing, as well as tours of the set and shooting locations. Booking a few nights is the only exclusive way to access the property because outside visitors are never permitted. We don't advise taking any chances, but the ranch does permit people to pause and take pictures in front of the famous Yellowstone Dutton Ranch sign when the cast isn't filming.

Who was Chief Joseph?

Born on March 3, 1840, Chief Joseph was also known as Young Joseph or Joseph the Younger. In the latter half of the 19th century, he served as the chief of the Wal-lam-wat-kain (Wallowa) band of the Nez Perce, a Native American tribe living in the interior Pacific Northwest of the United States. In the early 1870s, he succeeded his father, Tuekakas (Chief Joseph the Elder).

During the most turbulent time in their history, when they were forcibly relocated from their ancestral lands in the Wallowa Valley of northeastern Oregon onto a drastically reduced reservation in the Idaho Territory, Chief Joseph led his band of Nez Perce. Following a string of bloody clashes with white settlers in the spring of 1877, the Nez Perce who refused to be relocated, including Joseph's band and a Palouse tribe band that supported them, fled the country in an effort to obtain political asylum alongside the Lakota people, who had sought refuge in Canada under the leadership of Sitting Bull.

In the 1,170-mile fighting retreat known as the Nez Perce War, the U.S. Army led by General Oliver O. Howard pursued at least 700 men, women, and children who were being led by Joseph and other Nez Perce chiefs. The Nez Perce gained widespread admiration from their military foes and the American public for their fighting prowess and self-control in the face of incredible adversity. As a result of the war's coverage in American newspapers, Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce gained widespread public recognition.

The death of Chief Joseph on September 21, 1914, is still remembered as a defining moment in the American Indian Wars. Joseph gained notoriety as a humanitarian and a broker of peace because of his ardent, principled opposition to the expulsion of his tribe.
