Bruce Lee died from cerebral edema. Many fans still find Bruce Lee's passing mysterious. But, cerebral edema—excess fluid surrounding the brain that puts pressure on it—was the cause of Bruce Lee's death on July 20, 1973. However, painkillers taken for a headache that was bugging Lee, became the reason for his death. He had the same issue two months prior to his death but was being treated via medication

Although the death of the legend is surrounded by conspiracy theories and mysteries, his fans, friends, and family were not able to accept the reason given for his death, as he was a very healthy martial artist who reportedly had no life-threatening issues.

The real reason behind Bruce Lee’s death?

He was physically fitter than many guys his age thanks to his intensive exercise regimen, and numerous other martial artists were unable to keep up with him due to his commitment and discipline in their training. Due to this, Bruce Lee's immediate family and friends did not accept the official statement of what caused his death on July 20, 1973.

Raymond Chow, Bruce Lee's producer, was present when the actor passed away and reportedly stated that Bruce suffered an allergic response to a painkiller he had taken earlier that day. Although Chow's assertion wasn't totally true, the prescription definitely contributed to Bruce's demise. His body had no visible signs that would have indicated what caused his death; therefore, the coroner ordered an autopsy.

Lee was declared "death by misadventure" by the coroner following the examination and testing of the sampled material. By having this cause of death, it is implied that the individual who died did so voluntarily by taking a risk. The medical reason is that Bruce took the painkiller "Equagesic," which led to cerebral edema, or brain swelling.

The painkiller is a common drug that hasn't been linked to any other side effects in users who have used it before. Many people found it hard to believe that something as simple as taking painkillers for a headache could have such disastrous repercussions because of this fact and Bruce Lee's good health. When Bruce Lee passed away suddenly in 1973, he was 32 years old.

What happened to Bruce Lee, two months prior to his death?

The dialogue for Enter the Dragon needed to be redone, so ten weeks before his passing on May 10th, Lee entered a small dubbing session. To prevent the air conditioner's noise from ruining the music, the engineers switched it off. Lee fell and began convulsing after spending around thirty minutes in this sauna-like space. He had cerebral edema and needed to be taken to the hospital right away.

Bruce was effectively treated with Mannitol by the hospital personnel, and a few days later, he was allowed to leave the hospital. This happened approximately two months before he passed away, on May 10, 1973. This potentially fatal condition was a sign that Bruce might have had an underlying medical issue that was triggered at the time of his passing by taking the medication.

What happened on July 20, 1973?

Bruce Lee met with his producer Raymond Chow the morning of the day of his passing, as he was working diligently on the release of his most recent film. According to Raymond Chow, Bruce was lively and vibrant throughout their encounter and had no symptoms of being unwell.

Bruce visited his friend and coworker Betty Ting Pei's residence after the meetups. There is some suggestion that Betty and Bruce had a romantic relationship in addition to their working one. After spending some time by themselves in the apartment, they decided to meet Raymond Chow for dinner to discuss the terms of a new movie agreement. Bruce first expressed his headache and general discomfort. He laid down after receiving Equagesic from Betty, but he didn’t wake up, even after the continuous efforts of Betty and Raymond Chow, who was summoned on the account of Bruce not waking up.

Chow called for a doctor, and the medical personnel tried for another ten minutes to wake him up, though it was futile. An ambulance was called by the doctor, as the hospital wasn’t far away, but by the time the ambulance arrived, Bruce had already been pronounced dead.
