Musk started Zip2 in 1995, an online local business directory. In 1999, Compaq Computer Corp. acquired Zip2 for $307 million, which then became a part of the search engine AltaVista. The sale rewarded Musk with $22 million.

Then he started an online bank called X.com. In 2000, X.com merged with Confinity, and in 2002, it was renamed PayPal. When eBay acquired PayPal for $1.5 billion in 2002, it is estimated that Musk earned around $170 million, after taxes.

In 2002, Musk founded SpaceX, an aerospace manufacturer, whose current value is estimated at $74 billion. He joined Tesla in 2004 and was appointed its CEO in 2008. It is thought that the car company is worth more than $1 trillion. According to CNN Business, he has also founded The Boring Company, a tunneling construction company, which has been valued at nearly $5.7 billion.

Additionally, Musk co-founded the nanotechnology company Neurolink and AI research company Open AI. He invested in SolarCity, which was subsequently acquired by Tesla for $2.6 billion.

Musk applied for a Canadian passport through his Canadian-born mother, knowing that this would make it easier to immigrate to the United States. While waiting for his application to be processed, he went to the University of Pretoria for five months, which allowed him to avoid having to serve in the South African Defense Force.

Musk arrived in Canada in June 1989 and lived with a second cousin in Saskatchewan for a year. He worked odd jobs at a farm and lumber-mill. In 1990, he went to Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. Two years later, he transferred to the University of Pennsylvania, where he completed studies for a bachelor's degree in physics and a bachelor's degree in economics from the Wharton School in 1995.

In 1994, Musk had two internships in Silicon Valley: one at the energy storage startup Pinnacle Research Institute, which looked at electrolytic ultracapacitors for energy storage, and another at the Palo Alto-based startup Rocket Science Games. In 1995, he was accepted to a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program in materials science at Stanford University. But Musk decided to join the Internet boom instead and applied for a job at Netscape, to which he never got a response.
