Caan was one of three siblings who grew up in Queens. He went to school in New York City and later went to Michigan State University. He was a member of the Alpha Epsilon Pi Fraternity while at Michigan State University. He wanted to play football but was not able to make the team at Michigan State. He later went to Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York, but did not finish college.
While he was studying at Hofstra University, he became interested in acting. He was interviewed for a place at New York Cities Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theater, where he studied for five years.
