The county sheriff's department says the 20-year-old rapper left the motorcycle store and drove off. Shortly before 4:00 p.m. on June 18, 2018, the SUV approached him and blocked him off the road. The suspects, Newsome and Boatwright, exited the car and asked the rapper for "property." After a short struggle, they shot Onfroy down his neck several times.
The rapper was later transferred to the hospital. He was critically ill for approximately one and a half hours before being declared dead due to the damage from multiple gunshots to his neck.

One month after X's death, four men were charged with first-degree firearm murder and armed robbery to his death. The men identified were Dedrick Williams, Michael Boatwright, Trayvon Newsome, and Robert Allen, all in their early twenties by the time X died.
The suspected murderers have since pleaded not guilty to the charges against them. They are being held at the Broward County Sheriff's Office in Fort Lauderdale pending trial.
