Cyberpunk: Edgerunners currently has only one season with ten episodes that have a run-time of approximately 24 to 26 minutes per episode. Directed by Hiromi Wakabayashi and Hiroyuki Imaishi, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is an anime spinoff show that was created by Rafa Jaki and Studio Trigger for Netflix. It takes place in the dystopian Cyberpunk universe that was created by Mike Pondsmith and exists within its own fictional timeline. However, Edgerunners is set in the updated universe of Cyberpunk 2077, a video game created by CD Projekt Red, that has played a huge role in modernizing its popularity.
Produced by Studio Trigger under CD Projekt Red’s supervision, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is set in the Cyberpunk universe created by Mike Pondsmith and serves as a prequel to the game Cyberpunk 2077. Edgerunners tells the story of a talented but impetuous street kid named David Martinez after he loses everything he ever loved in a drive-by shooting.
The first few episodes set the scene of Martinez’s life as his overworked mother, Gloria, is killed in a drive-by which is later exacerbated by the fact that he is beaten up by bullies. Fuelled by the tragedy, Martinez decides to enhance his body using an implant that belonged to the unhinged James Norris and there are concerns that David could adopt his traits.
He then makes the choice to survive as an edgerunner, a mercenary outlaw known as a cyberpunk, before which he meets and joins up with Lucyna Kushinada and her gang. The group only wanted the implant inside Martinez but he convinces them to let him pay them back by working for them. From there, the story moves into an episodic structure as he learns the ropes with Lucy’s help, doing whatever the gang asks of him while getting to know the rest of the group at the same time.
His journey, however, is far from easy and is filled with twists and turns as he traverses around Night City and navigates while trying to survive in a dystopian city filled with crime, deception and cybernetic implants.
