What is The Music Man about?
Created by Meredith Willson, The Music Man is a musical with books, music, and lyrics, and is based on a story by Willson and Franklin Lacey. The storyline of the show revolves around a con man Harold Hill who poses as a boys' band organizer and leader and sells band instruments to the people of a Midwestern town. He falsely promises to train the members of a new band but plans to leave the town without teaching any music lessons. The town librarian and piano teacher Marian sees through the deceit of Hill but ends up falling in love with him after he helped her younger brother to overcome his lisp and social awkwardness.
Just like Marian, Harold Hill also reciprocates his love for her and risks being caught to win her heart. The Broadway show became a huge hit in 1957 and won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and ran for 1,375 performances. Due to the success, the Broadway show was later on adapted as a film in 1962 and also had a television adaptation in 2003.
