The mention of Friday the 13th brings images of hockey masks and machetes from one of the most iconic horror franchises in cinematic history - Friday the 13th films. The American horror franchise has spawned several spin-offs, sequels, and cross-overs with other horror franchises to end up becoming a cult favorite in modern times.

For thirty years, Jason Voorhees has been terrorizing the residents of Crystal Lake. Voorhees's appearance of a hockey mask covering his mangled face in the Friday the 13th movies has become a staple with horror flicks in recent times.

So far, there have been twelve Friday the 13th films in the franchise, with the last movie released on February 13, 2009.

A complete list of all twelve Friday the 13th films

Out of the twelve films in the Friday the 13th franchise, eight belong to the classic Paramount collection. The franchise was then sold to New Line Cinema, which ushered in a new age in the movie series, including a crossover with Freddy Krueger.

Let's take a look at all twelve films that carried on the legacy left behind by the murderous Jason Voorhees.

1) Friday the 13th (1980)

Directed by Sean S. Cunningham, the first of the twelve Friday the 13th films follows a group of camp counselors who try to reopen the summer camp at Crystal Lake after an unfortunate drowning incident twenty years back.

2) Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981)

Friday the 13th Part 2 follows the only survivor of the previous group, Alice. The killings at the summer camp begin again as the camp resumes. This movie was directed and produced by Steve Miner from the fame of Halloween H20: 20 Years Later and Lake Placid.

3) Friday the 13th Part III (1982)

Steve Miner also directs the sequel and this time, the story shifts to a cabin near Crystal Lake. The victims are a group of friends, and the killer makes his masked identity known this time.

4) Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984)

Joseph Zito's direction and Bruce Hidemi Sakow's story bring back the much-dreaded Jason after he is believed to be dead in the previous installment. Jason escapes from the morgue and continues to hunt new victims, which includes Tommy Jarvis and his family.

5) Friday the 13th: A New Beginning (1985)

The Friday the 13th films are brought back by Danny Steinmann as Jason is back from the dead yet again. Tommy Jarvis, who is now an adult, lives his life from one mental institution to another, but despite all this, the threat of murders lurks.

6) Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986)

As the title suggests, Jason is brought back from the dead this time as Tommy goes to his grave to accidentally resurrect him. A new age of zombie Jason ensues in the Tom McLoughlin slasher thriller.

7) Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood (1988)

Friday the 13th films get crazier as The New Blood explores the zombie theme combined with a telekinetic girl named Tina (Lar Park Lincoln), who gets her powers from a mishap at the Crystal Lake. John Carl Buechler directed the seventh film with Iain Paterson as the producer.

8) Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (1989)

Events of the eighth film take place in Manhattan as Jason reaches New York, stalking and plotting to kill a group of graduating students. Rob Hedden took charge of the direction and the story, while Randy Cheveldave produced it.

9) Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (1993)

Friday the 13th films shift hands from Paramount Pictures to New Line Cinema and finally show a side of Jason where he makes the least number of appearances on screen. The movie follows an FBI task force and the Voorhees family looking to put an end to the destruction.

10) Jason X (2002)

Jason X is the most far-reaching of all the Friday the 13th films as the director Jim Isaac takes Jason to space and sets it 400 years later in the timeline. He is cryogenically frozen and sent off to space with a group of students on a field trip as Earth becomes uninhabitable with time.

11) Freddy vs. Jason (2003)

Here is the crossover that has brought together the infamous lumbering lunatic Jason and Freddy Krueger of A Nightmare on Elm Street in a plan to get slasher flick enthusiasts excited. Freddy resurrects Jason after ten years since Freddy's last appearance.

12) Friday the 13th (2009)

The franchise's latest movie is a reboot of the first four films directed by Marcus Nispel (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre). The movie brings a fresh cast comprising Jared Padalecki, Danielle Panabaker, Aaron Yoo, Amanda Righetti, Travis Van Winkle, and Derek Mears.

Friday the 13th has long been known as the day of bad luck and other ill occurrences, and the franchise takes full advantage of this superstition. Find out more about this allegedly ill-fated day here.
