Is Beyoncé an underdog at the Grammys?
Despite Beyoncé's immense popularity and success, she is going into the 2023 Grammy Awards as somewhat of an underdog. Only three black women have ever won Album of the Year, including Natalie Cole, Whitney Houston, and Lauryn Hill. Of Beyoncé's 32 Grammy wins, only one has been in a top category, Song of the Year, which she won over a decade ago as a songwriter for “Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It).” The awards show's treatment of black musicians has been criticized in the past, and it is considered almost impossible for a black artist to win Album of the Year.
The Recording Academy's CEO, Harvey Mason Jr., has expressed his pride in the diversity of the 2023 nominees, who were selected by the Academy's nearly 13,000 voters. The academy has also added a special song for social change and five new categories, including songwriter of the year, to further diversify the awards show.
Has Beyoncé declined to submit to the Grammys?
Some artists, such as The Weeknd and Drake, have declined to submit their music for Grammy consideration due to the academy's historical failure to recognize and award a diverse range of artists. Despite this, Beyoncé remains hopeful and grateful for the recognition she has received and continues to inspire and uplift her fans through her music.
