Venezuelan conductor and violinist Gustavo Adolfo Dudamel Ramrez was born on January 26, 1981. The Simón Bolivar Symphony Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the Paris Opera all currently have him as their music directors. After the 2025–2026 orchestral season, Dudamel announced in February 2023 that he would move from Los Angeles, California, to lead the New York Philharmonic.
When did Gustavo learn the violin?
Dudamel, a trombonist and voice teacher, was born in Barquisimeto, Venezuela. He began studying music at a young age, joining the renowned Venezuelan musical education program El Sistema and learning the violin when he was ten.
He quickly started studying composition. José Luis Jiménez taught violin at the Jacinto Lara Conservatory, where he studied. Later, he continued his studies at the Latin-American Violin Academy under José Francisco del Castillo.
In 1995, Dudamel started taking conducting lessons with Rodolfo Saglimbeni and José Antonio Abreu. He was named the music director of Venezuela's Orquesta Sinfónica Simón Bolívar, the country's national youth orchestra, in 1999 and went on tour. In 2002, he went to Charles Dutoit's master class in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and in 2003, he assisted Simon Rattle as a conductor in Berlin, Germany, and Salzburg, Austria.

The Los Angeles Philharmonic, or "LA Phil," is an American orchestra with its home base in Los Angeles, California. The regular season runs from October through June at the Walt Disney Concert Hall, and the summer season runs from July through September at the Hollywood Bowl. Gustavo Dudamel is their current music director. The conductor laureate is Esa-Pekka Salonen, the conductor emeritus is Zubin Mehta, and the principal guest conductor is Susanna Mälkki. The orchestra's current resident composer is John Adams.
On September 13, 2005, at the Hollywood Bowl, Dudamel made his US conducting debut with the Los Angeles Philharmonic (LAP), performing "La Noche de los Mayas" by Silvestre Revueltas and Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5. The third piano concerto by Sergei Rachmaninoff, featuring Yefim Bronfman as soloist, and Béla Bartók's Concerto for Orchestra, the latter of which was recorded live and subsequently released by Deutsche Grammophon, were performed at Walt Disney Concert Hall in January 2007 under the baton of Dudamel.
As of the 2009–2010 season, Dudamel will serve as the LAP's new music director, as the LAP announced in April 2007. Beginning in September 2009, his initial contract in Los Angeles was for five years. The orchestra revealed in February 2011 that Dudamel's contract would be extended through the end of the 2018–19 season.
His Los Angeles Philharmonic contract was further extended by the ensemble through the 2021–2022 season in March 2015. His contract was further extended by the LAP through the 2025–2026 season in January 2020. The LAP declared in February 2023 that Dudamel's appointment as the orchestra's music director would end at the conclusion of the 2025–2026 season.

Dudamel has had two marriages. In 2006, he married Eloisa Maturén for the first time in Caracas. Maturén, a journalist and native of Venezuela, has received formal training in ballet. Maturen Dudamel Maturén was born to the couple on April 1, 2011. Dudamel and Maturén filed for divorce in March 2015.
Dudamel secretly wed Mara Valverde, a Spanish actress whom he had first met in 2016, in Las Vegas, Nevada, in February 2017. In 2018, he attained Spanish nationality. He and Valverde both call Spain home.
