English journalist, TV presenter, and author Richard Hammond announced his separation from his wife of 28 years, Amanda “Mindy” Hammond, on January 9, 2025. Taking to the social networking site X, the BBC Two co-host shared in a joint statement:
“A little update from us; this Christmas we were together as a family and this year we will still be a family but just structured a bit differently. Our marriage is coming to an end, but we’ve had an amazing 28 years together and two incredible daughters.”
The post further read:
“We will always be in each other’s lives and are proud of the family we created. We won’t be commenting further and sincerely hope that our privacy and that of our children will be respected at this time. With Love, Richard and Mindy.”
Richard and Mindy Hammond, who’s a columnist for the Daily Express, share two children, daughters Willow and Isabella.
More about Richard Hammond’s personal life
Richard Hammond met his now-estranged wife, Amanda “Mindy” Hammond, in 1995 when they were both working at a PR firm in London. In his October 2007 memoir, On The Edge: My Story, he shared it was love at first sight.
"In an instant, I fell in love with her and realized I had met my soulmate and best friend for life," he wrote at the time.
After dating for a few years, in May 2002, the couple tied the knot in an intimate ceremony in the presence of close friends and family. They share two adult kids, daughters: the elder sister, Isabella, aka Izzy (born in 2001), and the younger one, Willow (born in 2004).
While Hammond is close to his daughters, he has a professional association with Isabella. They co-host a podcast called Who We Are Now, which primarily focuses on men’s mental health and modern-day parenting insights. It was inspired by Richard’s brain injury that happened after an accident in 2006.
Izzy, 24, has over 92,000 followers on Instagram and appeared in an interview with ITV’s Lorraine in April 2004. During their podcast, Isabella has extensively talked about the impact of his father’s car crash on their family life, while her dad has repeatedly praised her sense of humor.
Per The Sun, Willow, 21, maintains a low profile yet has more than 15,000 followers on Instagram. Both sisters were reportedly approached to appear on ITV dating show Love Island.
During a 2013 interview with The Guardian, Richard shared that it’s been a delight raising two girls.
"It has been amazing having daughters. I never had sisters, so when I had the girls a whole new world opened up. They are fascinating. I hope I can be like my parents and help the children enjoy the lives they have. It's been quite a journey, from a smelly Ford Anglia to a Land Rover full of hairbrushes and hockey sticks," he told the outlet.
Six months back, Richard Hammond told The Telegraph during a conversation that the “secret” to his long-lasting marriage to Amanda was staying connected no matter what and knowing the small things, such as “what’s in the fridge” and what “cleaning products you use in the house.”
Richard Hammond’s daughters have not publicly commented on their parents’ split as news of him and his wife heading for a divorce after nearly three decades of marriage has gone viral.
Richard Hammond, 55, is best known as the former presenter of the BBC Two motoring show, Top Gear, which he co-hosted with Jeremy Clarkson and James May from 2002 to 2015. He was involved in presenting Amazon Prime Video's reality series, The Grand Tour, alongside the same duo. The motoring show ran from 2016 to 2024.
