The American neo-western drama Yellowstone has five seasons, though the series hasn't been concluded yet.
The first season of Taylor Sheridan and John Linson's neo-western drama television series Yellowstone debuted on the Paramount Network on June 20, 2018. Kevin Costner, Luke Grimes, Wes Bentley, Kelly Reilly, Cole Hauser, and Gil Birmingham are the series' main actors. A big cattle ranch, an Indian reservation, and land developers share borders, and the dispute along those borders is the focus of the episodes of the television series. On November 13, 2022, the fifth season officially began.
After recently growing weary of acting and starting to write screenplays, Sheridan started work on the series in 2013. Sheridan set the series in Montana and began writing the first scripts in Livingston, having previously lived in rural areas of states like Texas and Wyoming. The network rejected Sheridan's initial pitch for the show to HBO. The Yellowstone Dutton Ranch, also known as "the Yellowstone," is the largest ranch in Montana and is owned by the Dutton family, who are the subject of the television show.
The family drama at the ranch, as well as the nearby Broken Rock Indian Reservation, national park, and developers, are the main plot points. Yellowstone, the network's first scripted series, received the go-ahead from Paramount in May 2017. A first season of ten episodes was given a series order by Paramount. Sheridan was supposed to be the series' writer, director, and executive producer.
How many more seasons of Yellowstone will be there?
Taylor Sheridan, the Oscar-nominated writer, has signed a development deal with Viacom-CBS Entertainment and Youth Brands. It's safe to say that Taylor Sheridan's life, at least in terms of his career, is going very well. How many more seasons of the Yellowstone television series, starring Kevin Costner, will fit in that picture? When asked how many more there could be, Sheridan told Deadline in 2020:
"Well, I know how it ends. I know how the series ends, and you have to move in a straight line toward that end. You can’t walk in circles, waiting to get there, because the show will stagnate. So, you have to keep moving forward, and there have to be consequences in the world, and there has to be an evolution toward a conclusion. Can there be another two seasons beyond this? It could. I don’t see this as a procedural show. So, it’s not something that we could extend indefinitely. I don’t think anyone would want to do that; you’d cheapen the product. I haven’t had that conversation with the network or the studio yet. I'm sure it’s coming, but I would think that you would want this to end on an upswing as opposed to a plateau or a descent."
According to Taylor Sheridan's response, Yellowstone is moving toward a particular goal. Although that number isn't definite in any way, the co-creator suggests that at least two more seasons may be on the way. Although he made this statement two years ago, it's possible that he was referring to seasons four and five, with season five having started airing on November 13, 2022.
However, given the success of previous seasons, it cannot be denied that it is highly likely to come up with one more season. Taylor hasn't mentioned more seasons, and a sixth hasn't been announced either. In either case, Sheridan's objective (like Ozark's) appears to be simple: don't overstay the natural TV life expectancy.
Are there any prequels of Yellowstone?
After Taylor Sheridan agreed to a five-year deal with Viacom-CBS and MTV Entertainment Group, the prequel series 1883 made its debut on December 19, 2021, on Paramount+. A second prequel and spin-off, 1923, will center on a new Dutton family generation during the Western Expansion, Prohibition, and the Great Depression, which in Montana began a decade earlier. The present is depicted in "6666," a third upcoming spin-off that takes place on the Texas ranch known as Four Sixes.
1883
Yellowstone, 1883, tells the origin story of the Dutton family depicted on the show by following their 19th-century ancestors, James and Margaret Dutton, as they set out on their perilous journey through the Great Plains from Texas to Montana. Each of its nine episodes promises lawless lands, bloody gunfights, peril, and lots of dust.
With Tim McGraw and Faith Hill as the main performers, a star-studded cast was assembled. Sam Elliot and Eric Nelsen, who have won numerous awards, as well as Isabel May, LaMonica Garrett, Audie Rick, Emma Malouff, Dawn Olivieri, Marc Rissmann, James Landry Hébert, Alex Fine, Nichole Galicia, Stephanie Nur, Amanda Jaros, Noah Le Gros, and Martin Sensmeier, are also present. The first two episodes of the series aired in December 2021 on the Paramount Network, but all subsequent episodes were only available on Paramount+.
1923
The "next chapter" of the history of Yellowstone in 1923, according to a statement from Viacom-CBS, "will follow a new generation of Duttons during the time of western expansion, Prohibition, and the Great Depression."
Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren will play the lead roles in the prequel spinoff series, though details are still scarce. Additionally, it will debut in December 2022 and stream only on Paramount+ according to announcements.
6666
Instead of Montana, as in Yellowstone, 6666 depicts the raw and real perspective of a real cattle ranch in West Texas. "The Sixes is one of the oldest ranches in Texas, one of the oldest ranches in the country... one of the oldest functioning cattle ranches, horse training, breeding facilities in the country," White told ET. "I'm really excited for people to see the real, gritty, not glamorous world of real-life cattle ranching, now in modern times."
Both the 6666 premiere date and whether the show will be restricted to Paramount's streaming service are still up in the air. The cast has not yet been made public.
What is the critical response of Yellowstone?
Following its premiere, the show was met with a mixed response from critics. Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the first season a score of 54 out of 100 based on the reviews of 30 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews." On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the first season holds a 55% approval rating, with an average rating of 5.8/10 based on 51 reviews.
The website's critical consensus of the first season reads, "Yellowstone proves too melodramatic to be taken seriously, diminishing the effects of the talented cast and beautiful scenery." The second season received an approval rating of 88% based on 8 reviews, and subsequent seasons were generally met with much more favorable reviews.
The show's third season received a 100% approval rating based on the reviews of six critics, and its fourth season received an 89% approval rating based on the reviews of nine critics, and so on.
